Lyon’s Stellar Pitching Performance Not Enough In Freedom Loss To FDU-Florham

MADISON, N.J.- Senior Michael Lyon (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) allowed only one run over seven innings of work against FDU-Florham on Friday, but the Valiants struggled with their offensive production, losing to the Devils on a walk-off hit in the ninth inning, falling by a final score of 2-1 in Freedom Conference play.

Manhattanville (8-9, 3-4 Freedom) registered only four hits against FDU-Florham (2-11, 1-2 Freedom) starter AJ Pichalski. Both Lyon and Pichalski shut down the opposition for majority of the afternoon, but it was Pichalski who came away with the win. Lyon gave up 10 hits to the Devils, but his only run allowed was unearned after an error by the Valiants in the third.

At the plate, seniors Kevin Brady (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep), Nick Euvino (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) and Jeff Moskowitz (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) produced the only hits for Manhattanville. Brady hit a double and scored the only run for the Valiants while Euvino registered two hits at the plate. Pichalski struck out 12 Manhattanville batters, allowing a run that was also unearned.

The Devils got on the scoreboard first, coming in the third inning, as Frankie Tassielli came across the plate after an error from junior Jordanis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) at shortstop. The Valiants eventually tied it up the following inning as Nunez reached base on an error, scoring Brady to make it 1-1 after four. Both teams failed to drive in a run for the remainder of the game until some FDU heroics in the ninth. After taking out Lyon before the eighth inning, senior Zack Zareva (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) entered in relief, pitching 1 2/3 innings, surrendering only one hit that ended up being the biggest one of the day. With two outs in the final inning, James Dertouzos connected for one of his three hits, winning the game for FDU-Florham on a single to right center, giving the Devils their first victory in Freedom play.

Manhattanville and FDU-Florham will square off again tomorrow at Manhattanville Field for a conference double header starting at 11:30 a.m. Live stats can be accessed via GoValiants.com.
