MADISON, N.J. – The Manhattanville College women's soccer team could not generate anything on the offensive side of the ball and Drew University capitalized on one of their few chances at the other end in the second half as the Rangers defeated the Valiants by a 1-0 score in both teams' 2015 season-opener on Tuesday afternoon at Ranger Stadium.
The lone goal of the game came off the foot of Drew's Shannon Slowey in the 65th minute, as she took a feed from Katie Weber and beat Valiant junior netminder
Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) in a one-on-one situation inside the box for the score.
Diemicke and sophomore
Julianna Browne (Dover Plains, N.Y./Dover) combined to make four stops for Manhattanville, with both keepers turning aside two shots in 45 minutes of action. At the other end, Drew's Andee Higgins and Sara Nash did not have to make a save between them, as the Ranger defense held Manhattanville without a shot for the afternoon.
In addition to a 17-0 edge in total shots, Drew also held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks as well.
Manhattanville will look to up the offensive ante on Friday afternoon, when the squad travels to the University of Saint Joseph for a 4 p.m. meeting with the Blue Jays.
