Field Hockey Keeps Win Streak Alive with 2-1 Victory over Ramapo

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College field hockey team extended their win streak to four games as they took down the Roadrunners of Ramapo College 2-1 Thursday night.

The Valiants (4-3 overall) set the tone early in the game, jumping out to an early lead in the 6th minute.  Senior Morgan Parsons (Bear, Del./William Penn) fired a backhanded shot from just inside the top of the circle that froze the Roadrunner defense to put Manhattanville on top.

Ramapo (1-4 overall) answered quickly just three minutes later, when Kelsey Lawrence buried a shot on the left post off of a corner inserted by Lauren Grosso.  The goal seemed to wake up the Valiant defense, who allowed just three more shots in the last 61 minutes of the contest in what originally appeared to have the makings of an offensive shootout.

Manhattanville kept the tempo going on the offensive end after the Roadrunner goal.  Senior Rylee McGuire (Grantham, N.H./Lebanon) found Nicolle Fanelle inside the circle, and the freshman was able to deflect the ball past a charging Ramapo keeper for what turned out to be the game's winning goal. It was Fanelle's second goal of the season and also her second game-winning goal on the year.

"I would not have scored the goal without Rylee, she gave a great assist," said Fanelle.

The Valiants kept the pressure on in the second half, outshooting the Roadrunners 11-1, but were unable to beat keeper Emily Wisneski.  With the win, the Valiants move to 4-3 on the year, extending their current win streak to four games.

"This was really an important win for us," said head coach Kevin Kelly. "It pushed us over the .500 mark and kept the streak alive."

Manhattanville will look to keep their win streak intact when they travel to William Smith College this weekend to compete in the William Smith Classic.  The Valiants will face off against #8 William Smith on Saturday at 11:00 A.M.
