GENEVA, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College field hockey team was able to take down Saint Lawrence University Sunday afternoon in overtime in their final game of the William Smith Classic.
The Valiants (5-4 overall) were able to bounce back after suffering a loss to #8 William Smith on Saturday. Manhattanville was not only forced to bounce back after the loss, but were forced to bounce back after watching a 2-0 lead slip away in the second half on Sunday.
Senior
Morgan Parsons (Bear, Del./William Penn) got the scoring started in the 20
th minute, when the Valiants earned a penalty stroke and Parsons capitalized to give Manhattanville a 1-0 lead. Manhattanville kept the pressure up on the offensive end for the remainder of the half, outshooting Saint Lawrence (2-4 overall) 7-3 in the first 35 minutes.
The Valiants came out looking to increase their lead in the second half. Just two minutes after the restart,
Amanda Cirocco (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley) was able to put home a loose ball in the circle after a scramble to give Manhattanville a two-goal cushion.
Saint Lawrence would answer however. In the 42
nd minute, Molly Wood was able to bury a shot off of a penalty corner to cut the deficit to one. The Saints would continue to rally in the second half. In the 68
th minute, Bailey Sherwin collected a rebound in the circle and beat junior
Meghan Hughes (Kintnersville, Pa./Palisades) to tie the game at the end of regulation.
In the overtime period, Manhattanville came out on the attack. Four minutes into overtime, the Valiants were able to get off a flurry of shots, but were turned away three times by Saints goalkeeper Kim Haab. The Valiants pressure would pay off late in the period, when McGuire and freshman
Nicole Fanelle (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Township) broke out for a two-on-one situation against Haab. McGuire found Fanelle in the circle and the freshman was able to score her third game-winning goal of the season.

Meghan Hughes (Kintnersville, Pa./Palisades) made four saves on the day, including a key save in overtime that spurred the game-winning counter attack.
The Valiants will have a week to prepare for their opening conference matchup against Wilkes University. Manhattanville will face-off against the Colonels on Saturday, September 26 at 1:00 P.M. in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
