DANBURY, Conn. – Freshman
Kayleah McGuire (Somers, N.Y./Somers) recorded her first career double-double but it was not enough as the high-powered offense of Western Connecticut proved to be too much for the Valiants as they fell 81-65 in a non-conference matchup Saturday.
McGuire was a leader for Manhattanville (8-3 overall) once again off the bench, netting 13 points and hauling in 13 rebounds to record her first career double-double.
The Valiants battled the Colonels (7-4 overall) for much of the first quarter, heading into the first intermission trailing 20-18. After allowing a basket to the Colonels to begin the second quarter, the Valiants went on an 18-8 run to take a 36-30 into halftime.
Western Connecticut would battle back to begin the second half however, starting the third quarter with a 12-6 run to tie the game at 42 apiece less than three minutes into the quarter. After trading baskets over the next four minutes, the Colonels went on a 8-0 run to end the quarter and lead by six heading into the fourth quarter.
The Colonels would control the tempo in the final period, outscoring Manhattanville 22-12 over the final ten minutes to take down the Valiants.
The senior backcourt for Manhattanville was solid on the afternoon, as
Bri Pabon (Newington, Conn./Newington),
Ashley Raaf (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./Christ The King), and
Ashley Franklin (New Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) combined for 39 of the 65 points for Manhattanville.
The Valiants will have one more non-conference game before heading into MAC Freedom action. Manahttanville plays host to Maine Maritime on January 5 for a Tuesday afternoon matinee with tip-off set for 1:00 P.M.
