McGuire's Late Free Throws Force OT but Valiants Unable to Get By FDU-Florham

MADISON, N.J. – Freshman Kayleah McGuire (Somers, N.Y./Somers) hit two free-throws with 0.7 seconds to play to force overtime, but Manhattanville was unable to sneak past FDU-Florham Wednesday night, falling 72-62 to the Devils.

The Valiants (12-5 overall, 4-3 MAC Freedom) were looking to snap an eight-game losing streak against the Devils (13-5 overall, 5-2 MAC Freedom) Wednesday, but a late push by Fairleigh Dickinson proved to be too much for Manhattanville.

The two squads traded baskets for the majority of the first quarter, with the Devils taking a seven-point lead at one point before junior Sarah Kelley (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) hit a jump shot and senior Bri Pabon (Newington, Conn./Newington) knocked down a three-pointer to cut the deficit to two.  The Devils would hit a layup late in the quarter to head into the first break leading by four.

The Valiants came out in the second quarter with a stifling defense, holding the Devils to 0-4 shooting to begin the quarter, and used a 7-0 with five points from senior Ashley Raaf (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./Christ The King) to take a three-point lead at the 6:34 mark of the quarter.  The team's would continue to battle back and forth in the remainder of the frame, with the Devils again using a late layup to take a 33-31 lead into halftime.

After Fairleigh Dickinson jumped out to a seven-point lead to begin the second half, the Valiants would respond with a seven-point run to level the score at 40 apiece.  This time it was Manhattanville with the late basket in the quarter, with a Bri Pabon (Newington, Conn./Newington) layup to give the Valiants a 45-43 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

The Devils would respond however, using an 11-0 run to begin the final period, going 5-5 from the field and forcing three Valiant turnovers to take a seven-point lead with 6:18 to play.  Manhattanville would battle back, led by McGuire and junior Jazmin Pryce (Patterson, N.Y./Brewster) in the low post.  The two forwards combined for six points over the final six minutes, as Manhattanville would cut the deficit to two points with 44 seconds to play.

After a missed layup, the Devils came down with the rebound and called a timeout.  On the ensuing inbounds play, Fairleigh Dickinson tried an over-the-top pass to Shalette Brown, but Brown was called for a foul, which would give the Valiants the ball back with nine seconds to play.  After a missed shot, Manhattanville would keep possession on a jump ball called with just one second to play.  On the inbounds play, McGuire was fouled with 0.7 seconds on the clock, and the freshman would sink both free-throws to send the game into overtime.

In the overtime period the Valiants would get several unlucky bounces on the rim, shooting just 2-10 from the field in the period.  The Devils would take a three-point lead on a three-pointer from Alyssa McDonough and never looked back.  McDonough would go 4-4 from the foul line in the final minute to seal the victory for Fairleigh Dickinson.

Pabon finished the night as the team-leader in points with 19 to go along with seven assists.  McGuire was again a major factor off the bench, scoring 10 of her 16 points in the second half.

Manhattanville will look to get back on track in MAC Freedom play this weekend when they travel to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. to take on Wilkes University.  Tip-off is scheduled for 12:00 P.M.
