Mackey's 25 Kills Help Valiants Outlast Alvernia, Complete MAC Crossover Sweep

FREDERICK, Md. – Junior Kerry Mackey (Smithtown, N.Y./Christ the King) led the way with 33 kills and .316 hitting over eight sets as the Manhattanville women's volleyball team defeated host Hood College, 3-0, and Alvernia University, 3-2, at the Middle Atlantic Conference Crossover event, hosted by Hood on Saturday afternoon at BB&T Arena.

Mackey was huge in helping Manhattanville, which had previously been 1-11 in the annual matchup between MAC Freedom and MAC Commonwealth squads, post a pair of victories on the day and extend its winning streak to three. The junior averaged over four kills per set and made only eight errors on her team-best 79 attempts.

Classmate Asia Reid (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Nellie A. Thornton High School) followed with 27 kills and .284 hitting on the afternoon, while fellow junior Meagan Dattoma (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) added 22 kills on .250 hitting and 22 digs. Senior Megan Quinabo (Pearl City, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama) recorded 78 assists and 25 digs in the two matches, and classmate Adrianna Alves (New Rochelle, N.Y./Maria Regina) led the team with 37 digs (4.62/set).

The second match of the day was a slugfest between the Valiants and Crusaders, but Manhattanville came back from an early one-set deficit to pull out the five-set thriller, 3-2 (23-25, 25-18, 25-18, 20-25, 15-10).

Mackey was the star of the match for Manhattanville, putting down a career-high 25 kills that ties her for second-place on the school's single-match list. She did so with tremendous efficiency, hitting .407 with only three errors on 54 attacks. Reid had a big match of her own, recording a career-high 18 kills, while Quinabo came up huge by tying her own school single-match assists record with 51 as well.

After Alvernia took the opening set, Manhattanville regained control with back-to-back 25-18 wins to take a 2-1 lead. The Valiants used .600 hitting from Mackey and a 7-0 run on the serve of Alves to break open a 13-12 game and even the match at one set apiece, and then never trailed in the third set after a 4-0 run put the team up 6-4 early in the frame.

The Crusaders had their best set in the fourth frame, putting down 17 kills to help force a decisive fifth set. Mackey took over for Manhattanville with five of the team's nine kills in the final frame, including three in a row during a critical 6-1 run that turned a 7-4 deficit into a 10-8 advantage that the Valiants would never give up.

In the first match of the day, Manhattanville met up with the host Blazers and used some excellent hitting to pull out a 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-21) victory.

Dattoma paced the Valiants, putting down a match-high 12 kills on .357 hitting and adding 10 digs for her third double-double of the year. Reid added nine kills without an error on 21 attempts (.429 hitting), while Quinabo posted another double-double with 27 assists and 12 digs. Alves added a team-best 12 digs as well for the visitors.

Manhattanville hit very well in the first set, putting down 17 kills on 40 attempts (.325 hitting) on the way to taking the early advantage. Sophomore Laura LiVolsi (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) led the way for the Valiants with six kills on 13 attempts in the frame, while Dattoma and Reid chipped in five and four kills, respectively.

The Valiants used a big run to take control of the second set, using a 9-2 run to turn a tie score into an 18-11 advantage. Playing with the lead, the visitors were content to simply alternate points the rest of the way, earning themselves a two-set lead.

Manhattanville found itself behind for the first portion of the third stanza, but used a 6-1 run to take back the lead at 13-12. With the match tied at 14, another 6-1 stretch allowed the Valiants to finally take control and complete the sweep.

Manhattanville will look to carry its momentum back into MAC Freedom play on Tuesday, when the Valiants travel to St. Davids, Pa., to take on AVCA #13 Eastern University beginning at 7 p.m.
