ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Manhattanville College women's volleyball team had its 2016 season come to a close on Saturday afternoon, as the second-seeded Valiants fell to top-seeded Emerson College, 3-1 (25-13, 19-25, 25-17, 28-26), in the quarterfinals of the ECAC Div. III Women's Volleyball Championships, held at Lebanon Valley College's Sorrentino Gymnasium.
Junior
Asia Reid (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Nellie A. Thornton High School) led Manhattanville (18-10) with 14 kills, while freshman
Austen Brauer (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) had the best match of her first collegiate season with new season highs of 13 kills (on .357 hitting) and 10 digs. Senior
Megan Quinabo (Pearl City, Hawaii/Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama) also had a double-double with a match-high 38 assists and 11 digs, while junior
Kerry Mackey (Smithtown, N.Y./Christ the King) also reached double figures in kills with 12.
Emerson jumped on Manhattanville early in the first set, scoring the match's first five points and taking 10 of the first 11. The Valiants got back within six at 12-6, but the team only managed five kills in the set and could get no closer the rest of the way.
The second set was even at four apiece before four straight points gave Manhattanville an 8-4 edge. The lead was still four at 15-11 before a 5-1 run opened up the team's largest lead of the set at 20-12, allowing the team to cruise to the set-two victory.
The Valiants held a 7-5 lead early in the third set following an ace from senior
Sam Miano (Bronx, N.Y./Maria Regina) and a Mackey kill, but a 7-1 run for the Lions put Emerson back in control. Manhattanville got back within one at 13-12, but another Emerson run – this time a 6-1 stretch – helped put the set out of reach.
The fourth set was easily the most competitive of the match, featuring 17 ties and nine lead changes. With the score tied at 19, Manhattanville scored four of the next five points to take a 23-20 lead, but four straight Emerson points suddenly put the Valiants at match point. Two subsequent Lions errors gave the Valiants a set point at 25-24, but the team could not convert. A Brauer kill staved off a second match point and tied the set at 26, but back-to-back kills from Bella Edwards finished off the set and the match in favor of the Lions.
Thanks to her team-high in kills today, Reid finished the year with 286 kills, which is the third-highest single-season total in school history and four kills ahead of Mackey, who finishes fifth in single-season kills at 282. With her nine digs today, senior
Adrianna Alves (New Rochelle, N.Y./Maria Regina) moved into a tie for eighth place on the school's single-season digs list with 372, while Quinabo's 38 assists moved her into third place all-time with 796 this season.
Manhattanville as a team finishes one of the most successful years in school history, having reached the MAC Freedom Tournament for the first time and making the ECAC Tournament for the second straight season.
