PURCHASE, N.Y. - Sophomore Kayleah McGuire (Somers, N.Y./Somers) recorded her second double-double of the year but 22 turnovers turned out to be the deciding factor for Manhattanville as the Valiants fell to the Camels of Connecticut College 72-52 in the Championship game of the 2016 Battle of the Castle Tip-Off Tournament at Kennedy Gymnasium Sunday.
McGuire finished with a team-best 16 points and 10 rebounds to record the double-double, but Manhattanville committed 22 turnovers on the day and were never able to recover as Connecticut scored 15 points off turnovers for the day. Fellow sophomore Ivy Coles (Freeport, N.Y./Christ The King) finished with a new career-best in points with ten and freshman Nancy Caballero (Henderson, Nev./Liberty) hauled in nine rebounds in the loss.
It was hot shooting early and a dominant inside game that helped the Camels (2-0) build their lead and hold on for the 20-point victory. Tournament Most Valuable Player Kylie Caouette hit two three-pointers early on to give Connecticut a 15-5 lead, forcing a time-out by head coach Kate Vlahakis. Manhattanville was never able to gain momentum in the contest, as forwards Mairead Hynes and Payton Ouimette combined for 28 points and 19 rebounds and caused havoc for the Valiant forwards all day. Four different Camels finished in double-figures for the day.
The double-double performance helped McGuire earn a spot on the All-Tournament team. The full All-Tournaemnt team consisted of:
Nina Hodanich - Keystone College
Natasha Hessling - Marywood University
Kayleah McGuire- Manhattanville College
Mairead Hynes - Connecticut College
Kylie Caouette - Connecticut College
