BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The defense forced 31 turnovers, allowing a season-low 31 points and freshman
Nancy Caballero (Henderson, Nev./Liberty) led the way with a career-best 16 points as the Valiants pounced the Cougars of Medgar Evers College for a 41-point victory in the Consolation Match of the Betty Shabazz Tournament at the Cougars' Cove Sunday afternoon.
Three players finished in double figures for the Valiants, including Caballero's game-high 16, and 11 points from sophomore
Ivy Coles (Freeport, N.Y./Christ The King) and 10 points from senior
Sarah Kelley (Ewing, N.J./Ewing). Caballero hauled in 10 rebounds for her second consecutive double-double and senior guard
Brittany Deieso (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) and Coles dished out seven assists each to help the Valiants roll to the third-place finish.
It was all Manhattanville early as the Valiants dropped 21 points in the opening quarter to take a nine-point lead through the opening 10 minutes of action. They continued to expand their lead in the second stanza, outscoring the Cougars 17-10 to take a 38-22 lead into the halftime break. The Valiants finished the half shooting 40 percent on 16-40 from the field, with Caballero going 4-5 herself for ten points.
In the second half, the Valiant defense stifled the Medgar Evers offense approach. Over the final twenty minutes, the Cougars shot just 13 percent, making just three shots from the field on 23 attempts. Manhattanville also forced 18 turnovers in the half to put the game well out of reach.
The Valiants return to the home court of Kennedy Gymnasium on Tuesday, November 29 when they host Wesleyan beginning at 6:00 pm.
