Women's Basketball Upended by Staten Island 74-56

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Sharp shooting from Dolphins led to ten three-pointers, downing the Manhattanville College women's basketball team Wednesday evening in their penultimate game of the 2016 calendar year in non-conference matchup against the College of Staten Island.

Manhattanville (4-4) shot 38 percent from the field Wednesday, including an impressive 48 percent in the second half, but the effort came up short as the Valiants were unable to overcome a ten-point halftime deficit inside the CSI Sports and Recreation Center.

Seven different players recorded five points or more in the contest, led by sophomore Kayleah McGuire (Somers, N.Y./Somers) who netted ten points to go along with five rebounds.  Junior Kelsey Decker (Sidney, N.Y./Sidney) hit two three-pointers to help her to nine points, and freshman Nancy Caballero (Henderson, Nev./Liberty) added nine points of her own while hauling in nine rebounds over 26 minutes of action.

The Dolphins jumped out to their lead early on, outscoring the Valiants 15-10 over the final 7:38 of the first quarter to take a 20-16 lead at the first break.  In the second quarter, Manhattanville struggled offensively, scoring just seven points to 13 from the Dolphins as Staten Island took their ten-point edge into the locker room for halftime.

The Valiants' hot hand was matched by an equally impressive output by Staten Island in the second half, as the teams combined to shoot 49 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes of action.  Despite the improved shooting effort, the Dolphins poured in 23 points in the third quarter to extend their lead by 11 points.  Manhattanville responded with 21 points of their own in the final period, but it was too little too late as the Valiants fell by a 74-56 final in Staten Island.

With the loss, the Valiants drop to 4-4 on the year.  They will look to move back above the .500 mark Saturday when they do battle with the Chargers of Colby-Sawyer on New Years Eve with tipoff scheduled for 12:00 pm.
