PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Manhattanville bats exploded behind a huge performance from freshman
Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) as the Valiants took down Anderson Hill Road rival Purchase College 18-3 Tuesday afternoon.
Scoggins went 3-for-3 from the plate Tuesday, driving in six runs behind a pair of triples. The six RBI's for Scoggins are the most in a single-game by a Manhattanville player since Chris Nastasi brought home six against DeSales on April 26, 2009. Just three other players in Valiant program history have driven in more runs in a single game, with Chris Marker holding the record of eight against Stevens on April 22, 1995.
Senior
Jordanis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) and junior
John Delahanty (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) each drove in three runs apiece as the Valiants (4-5 overall) compiled 20 hits in the contest and plated 18 runs, their highest run output in a nine-inning game since April 10, 2010 when they scored 18 runs against Wilkes University. The 20 hits is also historic, as it is the highest team output in a nine-inning contest since the Valiants recorded 20 against Mitchell College on March 15, 2010.
On the mound, junior transfer
John Moschetti (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) earned the win for Manhattanville, tossing five innings, allowing five hits and three runs for his first Valiant victory. Sophomores
Antonio Ogando (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic),
William Tempone (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East),
Thomas Contrelli (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place), and
John Fanelli (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) each threw an inning apiece and held the Panthers (4-6 overall) scoreless the rest of the way.
Manhattanville jumped out to a big lead in the opening stanza, plating six runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run triple from Scoggins. Junior Anthony Ianuzzi beat out an infield single to score Scoggins in the following at bat to make it a 6-0 game. Scoggins again delivered in the second inning, blasting a double to drive home Delahanty and extend the lead to eight runs.
The Valiants added five more in the fifth inning, starting with an RBI single from Nunez, followed by a two-run single by Delahanty. Scoggins stepped up and delivered another shot, bringing home two more runs on his second triple of the afternoon to break the game open, giving Manhattanville a 14-3 lead.
In the seventh, Scoggins delivered his final RBI of the day, driving in junior
Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) with a sacrifice fly for his sixth run batted in of the afternoon.
The Valiants will have a quick turnaround before taking the field again as they play host to the College of Staten Island Wednesday at Manhattanville Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 P.M.
