PURCHASE, N.Y. - Two late-game rallies helped the Manhattanville College softball team stay perfect on the 2016 season, as the Valiants started MAC Freedom play with a 6-4 and 10-2 sweep of King's (Pa.) College on Saturday afternoon at Manhattanville Field.
Manhattanville (12-0, 2-0 MAC Freedom) continues the best start to program history with the two wins, and currently has the most wins of any undefeated team remaining in Division III this year.
Sophomore
Alycia Feeney (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) led the Valiants in the circle, earning a win and a save for the home team by allowing just four unearned runs in the two victories. Freshman
Julianna Orrico (Bronx, N.Y./Preston) also remained unbeaten by allowing two runs in five innings of game two.
At the plate, freshman
Evonne Torres (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Pioneer) and sophomore
Alexis Ventarola (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) both hit .500 with a homer, two RBIs and two runs scored on the day, while freshman
Aarin Hartenstein (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) added a homer, two RBIs and three runs scored for Manhattanville. Both Hartenstein and classmate
Desiree Buboi (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran) had hits in both games, extending their career-opening hitting streaks to 12 games apiece.
GAME ONEThe first game of the day started badly for the Valiants as King's scored four runs in the first inning, but Feeney kept the Lady Monarchs in check the rest of the game and Manhattanville rallied with four runs in the sixth inning to pull out a 6-4 win.
Four unearned runs crossed the plate for the visitors in the opening frame, but Manhattanville got two of those runs back in the bottom half when a dropped fly ball allowed Buboi and classmate
Sophia Chapelone (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) to come home with two outs.
The Valiant bats remained quiet against King's hurler Rachel Linso until the sixth. Hartenstein led off the sixth stanza with a single and then moved to third on a ground-rule double off the bat of Torres. Junior
Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) got one run back with a sacrifice fly, and classmate
Adrena Daw (Crompond, N.Y./Walter Panas) delivered a pinch-hit double to tie the score. Ventarola then untied the game by lacing a ball down the right-field line and coming all the way around for an inside-the-park homer.
Feeney (6-0) then closed the door in the seventh to complete the win. After a tough first, the righthander allowed only three hits over the final six innings, finishing the game with six strikeouts and five hits allowed.
GAME TWOThe second game of the day was another low-scoring affair for the first five innings before Manhattanville exploded for six runs in the sixth to end the game early and complete the sweep with a 10-2 victory.
Torres and Hartenstein each homered and drove in two in the game-two victory, while Buboi also had two hits and drove in a pair.
King's again took an early lead in the contest, getting an RBI groundout from Alizabeth Ellsworth in the top of the second. Manhattanville got that back and more two batters into the bottom half, as Hartenstein led off with a walk and came home on a Torres long ball. Two more scored in the third inning, with Chapelone scoring on a Buboi single and sophomore
Laurel Coito (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) crossing the plate on a ground out from junior
Alicia Marino (Mahopac, N.Y./Pleasantville).
After King's got back within two in the fifth inning, Manhattanville broke out with six in the sixth to end the game. Hartenstein started the rally with a two-run homer, followed by a Torres single and an RBI triple from Diemicke that turned into two runs when the throw to the plate got away. Back-to-back run-scoring singles from Coito and Buboi then ended the game.
Orrico (5-0) earned her fifth win by tossing five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits. Feeney came on for the sixth inning and ended up pitching just the one frame, striking out the side to earn the save.
Manhattanville will continue into MAC Freedom action on Friday, when the Valiants host FDU-Florham for two games at Manhattanville Field starting at 2 p.m.
