PURCHASE, N.Y. – Freshman
Julianna Orrico (Bronx, N.Y./Preston) tossed her second shutout of the season and also homered for her first collegiate hit to lead the Manhattanville College softball team to its 18th consecutive victory with a 4-1 and 8-0 sweep of Mount Saint Mary College in non-conference action on a blustery Wednesday afternoon at Manhattanville Field.
Getting her first career start outside of the flex position, Orrico had a big day at the plate for Manhattanville (18-0), going 3-for-3 with a homer and a double. Classmate
Sophia Chapelone (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) added four hits in six at-bats while scoring three times, and junior
Alicia Marino (Mahopac, N.Y./Pleasantville) hit a grand slam as part of a team-best six-RBI day.
Orrico and sophomore
Alycia Feeney (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) also did their part in the circle to limit Mount Saint Mary (6-7), allowing just one run on 10 hits in 12 combined innings.
GAME ONE The Valiant offense was limited to a season-low four runs on six hits in the first game of the day, but a few big swings of the bat provided enough offense and Feeney did the rest in the circle to pull out a 4-1 win.
Manhattanville got its first three batters on base in the first without the benefit of a hit, and Marino drove home Chapelone and sophomore
Laurel Coito (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) with a single through the left side. The Valiants added a run in the fourth on a Chapelone RBI single and one more in the sixth when freshman
Aarin Hartenstein (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) crushed a ball deep over the fence in right for her fourth homer of the season.
That was more than enough for Feeney (10-0), who struck out five and allowed only six hits. The sophomore came one out short of her fifth shutout of the year, but still picked up the victory.
GAME TWO The Manhattanville bats woke up early in game two, scoring six times in the first and two more times in the second to cruise to an 8-0 victory.
The first five batters of the game all reached and scored for the Valiants in the opening frame. Chapelone and Coito started the rally with back-to-back singles, and Chapelone came home on another base hit from freshman
Desiree Buboi (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran). After a walk to fellow freshman
Evonne Torres (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Pioneer) loaded the bases, Marino then unloaded them with a grand slam to center field, her fifth homer of the season. Orrico added to the lead later in the inning, pulling a ball down the left-field line for her first collegiate hit and homer to make it a 6-0 game.
The top of the order again started a rally in the second inning, and Chapelone and Buboi both eventually came home on a two-run single from Hartenstein.
Orrico (7-0), meanwhile, made quick work of the Knights at the plate, allowing only four hits and striking out two for the five-inning shutout.
Manhattanville will return to MAC Freedom play on Saturday, when the Valiants battle fellow conference unbeaten Misericordia University for two games starting at 1 p.m. in Dallas, Pa.
