Baseball Drops Two to Unbeaten Swarthmore in Myrtle Beach

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. –  The Valiants comeback efforts against Swarthmore were spoiled in extra innings as Manhattanville dropped two games to the Garnet Sunday afternoon at the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach.

Junior Jordanis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) led Manhattanville with two runs batted in on two hits on the day. Conklin scored four runs for the Valiants in game two.  On the mound, sophomore Dennis Berardi (Brewster, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) struck out five in 4.2 innings pitched but earned a no-decision in game two after the Valiants comeback in the final inning.

GAME ONE: Swarthmore (4-0 overall) jumped on the Valiants (0-2 overall) early in the contest, plating three runs in the first inning on a fielding error by Manhattanville, followed by a two-run double by Joseph Jackson. Senior Dillon Healy (Hastings, N.Y./Hastings) struggled in his season debut on the mound for the Valiants.  Healy allowed five more runs in the third inning before giving way to sophomore John Fanelli (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep).  Fanelli worked out of a bases loaded jam in the third inning and added a scoreless fourth inning to keep the score 8-0.

Fresman Francisco Jaile (Hartsdale, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) made his collegiate debut when he took the mound in the fifth inning.  The Garnet tacked on two more runs in the inning on three hits and two walks allowed.  Jaile worked out of the inning, stranding three Swarthmore runners on base but the Valiants found themselves trailing 10-0.

Manhattanville plated their only run of the game in the top half of the sixth.  Freshman Bryan Borruso (Blaivelt, N.Y./Tappen Zee) led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a walk by classmate Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun).  Junior Jordanis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) drove home Borruso but the Garnet worked out of the inning to keep the Valiants out of reach.  Swarthmore tacked on a final run in the bottom of the sixth and came away with the win.

GAME TWO:  The Valiants scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings, but their comeback attempt fell short as Swarthmore (5-0 overall) remained unbeaten on the year, dropping Manhattanville (0-3 overall) for the Sunday sweep at the Cal Ripken Experience.

Swarthmore plated three runs in the top half of the opening frame, taking advantage of four walks and a hit batsman by pitcher Dennis Berardi (Brewster, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) to jump out to the early lead.  Berardi settled down however and worked out of the early jam, stranding three runners on base by striking out Charles Levitt to end the inning.

The Valiants cut into the deficit immediately, getting a run back in the bottom half of the stanza after Nunez drove in his second run of the day to make it a 3-1 game.  Swarthmore once again took advantage of a Manhattanville error the following inning, scoring an unearned run on an error to extend the lead back to three.

It was Manhattanville taking advantage of a Garnet miscue, scoring junior Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) on a wildk pitch to once again cut the deficit to two runs.  The Valiants had two runners in scoring position but Swarthmore was able to get junior John Delahanty (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) to ground out to end the threat.

Berardi was forced to work out of a jam once again in the top of the fourth, loading the bases with three walks, but got out of the jam with a strikeout and a fly out to end the inning.

In the fifth, Berardi retired the first two batters of the inning, but a walk and a bunt single put runners on first and second with two outs.  Swarthmore drove in both runners with a triple in the right center gap, making it a 6-2 game.

The Valiants chipped away again in the bottom half of the frame.  Conklin singled up the middle to leadoff the inning, and quickly scored after junior Joe Anselmi (North Rockland, N.Y./North Rockland) doubled to deep center field to drive in the run and make the score 6-3.

Sophomore Danny Gallagher (Nanuet, N.Y./Paramus Catholic) doubled with one out in the sixth inning, and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Junior Joe Booker (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Port Jefferson) was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners with one out, and Booker was replaced by sophomore Nick Campana (Yonkers, N.Y./Iona Prep) as a pinch runner.  On a pickoff attempt, Campana got caught in a rundown which allowed Conklin to score from third and cut the game to a 6-4 margin.

Swarthmore led off the final inning with a double by Joe Walker.  After Walker was replaced with a pinch runner, the Garnet advanced the runner to third on a sacrifice bunt.  Swarthmore again took advantage of a Valiant miscue, scoring on a passed ball to make it a 7-4 lead.

The Valiants found some magic in their final at bat however.  Conklin led off the inning with a walk, and after a strikeout, advanced to second and third on consecutive wild pitches.  After Jordanis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) walked, fellow junior Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) singled to left field to score Conklin and cut the deficit to two.  Delahanty followed up with a single of his own to score Nunez.  Both runners advanced an extra base on the throw home to put two runners in scoring position with one out.  Borruso drew a walk in the following at bat, and Lynch scored from third on a wild pitch.  The momentum ended there for Manhattanville however, as Borruso was picked off of second base after a steal to end the inning, stranding a runner at third.

In extra innings, the Garnet led off with a walk and a stolen base to put a runner in scoring position with nobody out.  After senior Sam Garito (New Rochelle, N.Y./Iona Prep) struck out a Swarthmore batter, a base hit put runners on the corners with one out.  A subsequent sacrifice fly game Swarthmore a one-run edge once again over the Valiants.

Charles Groppe took the mound in the bottom of the eighth for Swarthmore and did not allow the Valiants to extend the game any further, picking up his first save of the season.
