CLERMONT, Fla. - The offense kept coming for the Manhattanville College on Tuesday at the Spring Games, as the Valiants extended their season-opening winning streak to six games with a 9-5 win over Penn State Behrend and an 11-6 victory over Webster University.
Manhattanville (6-0) got five runs batted in each from junior
Brittany Deieso (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) and freshman
Aarin Hartenstein (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) in the two wins. Deieso went 4-for-6 with a homer, triple and double for the Valiants, while Hartenstein had a triple and three doubles at the plate. Junior
Alicia Marino (Mahopac, N.Y./Pleasantville) also homered and drove in three as well in the two wins.
GAME ONEManhattanville overcame a pair of one-run deficits in the first game of the day, scoring seven times in its final three at-bats to put away Penn State Behrend by a 9-5 score.
The middle third of the Valiant order did much of the damage in the win, led by Hartenstein and Marino with three RBIs each. Freshman
Evonne Torres (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Pioneer) also had three hits and scored three runs for the Valiants.
After Behrend got on the board first with a run in the opening frame, Manhattanville came back with two in the bottom of the second to take the lead. Torres led off with a double and came home on a Hartenstein RBI triple, and Hartenstein then scored on a Marino sacrifice fly.
A two-run homer from Katie Gozzard put PSU Behrend again up by a run, but again the Valiants came back with a two-run double off the bat of sophomore
Alexis Ventarola (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) to give the team a 4-3 lead. Manhattanville added three more in the fifth inning courtesy of a Marino two-run homer and an RBI triple from Deieso.
Behrend got back within two thanks to a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, but Hartenstein got those runs back with a two-run double in the bottom half and sophomore
Alycia Feeney (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) set the Nittany Lions down in order in the seventh to finish the win.
Feeney (3-0) earned her third win in as many days by allowing three earned runs on eight hits in the full seven innings.
GAME TWOThe Valiants jumped out to a 7-0 lead on the way to Tuesday's second win, as the team held off a late charge from Webster in the 11-6 victory.
Deieso led the charge offensively with a homer and four RBIs at the plate, while Hartenstein made contributions both at the plate and in the circle by going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and also getting the final five outs for the save.
Manhattanville came out swinging in the first inning, as freshman
Sophia Chapelone (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) led off with a triple and came home on a Torres RBI double. Three more crossed the plate in the second inning, with Chapelone doubling home a pair and then coming home on a Ventarola two-bagger. The doubles and runs kept coming in the third, with Hartenstein driving in one and Deieso bringing home two more to help the Valiants to a 7-0 lead after three innings.
Webster attempted to rally in the fifth inning, scoring five times off freshman
Julianna Orrico (Bronx, N.Y./Preston), but Deieso got two of those runs back with a two-run homer in the bottom half.
The Gorloks threatened again in the sixth inning, scoring one run and getting the tying run to the plate with one out. But Hartenstein came in from first base to induce a pair of ground balls that got the Valiants out of the inning. After doubling home another run in the bottom of the sixth, she then set Webster down in order in the seventh to pick up her second save of the year.
Orrico (3-0) pitched well until running into trouble late in her outing, but still remained perfect on the year by ceding six runs on 11 hits in 5.1 innings.
After a well-deserved day off tomorrow, Manhattanville will be back on the field on Thursday evening when the squad takes on Waynesburg University at 5 p.m. and SUNY Potsdam at 7 p.m.
