WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – A late rally in game two came up short as the Valiants split a doubleheader matchup with Wilkes University Saturday afternoon.
Junior
Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) compiled four hits on the day including three RBI's. Senior
Jordanis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) and freshman
Bryan Borruso (Blaivelt, N.Y./Tappen Zee) each drove in two runs.
GAME ONE: Seniors
Kurt Hommen (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and
Jordanis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond), and
Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) each recorded two hits in game one. Lynch and Nunez also recorded two RBI's in the win.
The Valiants (17-10 overall, 8-5 MAC Freedom) took a 5-0 lead into the seventh inning, but Wilkes (17-14 overall, 6-9 MAC Freedom) rallied to tie the game with five runs in their final at bat.
After both teams went scoreless in the eighth, Manhattanville took a 6-5 lead in the second extra inning after a fielding error by Nick Capozzi. The Valiants took a two-run lead on another Wilkes error. The Colonels attempted to rally once again, but sophomore
Anthony LoFaro (Haworth, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest) came in on relief to record the final out of the game, stranding two Colonel runners to earn the save and secure the season series for Manhattanville.
GAME TWO: The backend of the doubleheader was a back and forth contest that featured three ties and four lead changes. Juniors
Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) and
Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep), sophomore
Danny Gallagher (Nanuet, N.Y./Paramus Catholic) and freshman
Bryan Borruso (Blaivelt, N.Y./Tappen Zee) had two hits each in the losing effort. Borruso also led the offensive attack with two runs batted in.
After falling behind 4-0 after two innings, the Valiants got a run back in the fourth on an RBI single from Conklin. The Colonels responded with a run in the bottom half of the frame before the Valiants started to rally.
Manhattanville leveled the score with four runs in the fifth, highlighted by RBI singles from Lynch, junior
Joe Booker (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Port Jefferson), and Gallagher. The Colonels retook the lead in the sixth, but the Valiants answered again in their at bat. Junior
John Delahanty (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) tied the game with a sacrifice fly before Borruso gave the Valiants a 7-6 lead with an RBI single to left field.
The Valiants were unable to hold the lead however, as Wilkes plated two runs in the sixth inning to take an 8-7 lead. Manhattanville again tried to rally in their final at bat stranded two runners in scoring position to end the game.
Manhattanville will look to shake up the MAC Freedom standings tomorrow when they host first place Misericordia University in a makeup doubleheader. The Valiants currently hold the fourth seed in the MAC Freedom standings and are looking to secure a birth to the conference playoffs for the fifth consecutive year.
