PURCHASE, N.Y. - A late charge from Ramapo College downed Manhattanville College in the team's Think Pink game Saturday as the Valiants fell to the Roadrunners 10-9 (OT) in non-conference women's lacrosse action at GoValiants.com Field.
Freshman
Kat Reilly (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) and junior
Jenna Nance (Glendale, Calif./Glendale) led Manhattanville offensively, scoring three goals apiece in the loss. Junior
Sarah Dalsey (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) scored twice on the day and sophomore
Katie Zambrotta (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) recorded two assists for the Valiants. In goal, junior
Lauren Cassidy (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) stopped ten shots on the day but her efforts could not deter the comeback from the Roadrunners.
The Valiants (5-3) got the scoring started on Reilly's 18th goal of the season four minutes into the game. After Ramapo (6-4) leveled the score 96 seconds later, sophomore
Carly Weiss (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) gave Manhattanville the lead with her 21st tally of the year.
The Roadrunners responded a goal to tie the score at two goals apiece midway through the half. After Ramapo took the lead, Reilly evened the score once again with her second goal of the day with 10:46 remaining. The two teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the half and entered halftime tied 3-3.
Reilly continued to have the hot stick for the Valiants, giving Manhattanville the lead with her third goal of the game after fighting off multiple defenders and scoring from distance. Dalsey followed up the goal with one of her own on a free position attempt less than two minutes later to give the Valiants a two-goal lead.
With 17 minutes remaining, Nance extended the lead again for the Valiants with her second goal of the game. After a Ramapo goal, Nance found the back of the net once again and Dalsey followed up with a goal of her own to make it an 8-4 game with 12:02 left.
After the Roadrunners came storming back with three goals in less than two minutes, Nance scored to end the run and give Manhattanville a 9-7 lead with 7:28 to play. The lead remained with less than two minutes on the clock before Ramapo scored on a free position attempt with 1:35 remaining to cut the deficit to one.
Cassidy made a huge save with 40 seconds left to keep Manhattanville ahead, but the Valiants could not clear the defensive zone and gave the ball back to the Roadrunners. After a shot wide with under 10 seconds left, Alyssa Tachon went to goal with the clock winding down and found the net with less than two seconds left to force overtime.
In the overtime period, Ramapo held the ball for almost all of the first three minutes, but the Valiant defense held firm and sent the game into the second half of overtime. The visitors again controlled the draw to gain possession, and Lindsay Hughes gave Ramapo the win with a goal on a free-position attempt with 2:24 left in extra time.
Manhattanville finished the game with a 34-26 edge in shots, but the Valiants were done in by just 2-of-9 shooting from the eight-meter arc. Ramapo, conversely, scored on four of its six free-position chances, including the game-winner.
Manhattanville returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Saint Joseph's (L.I.) for a non-conference game. That game is scheduled for 5 p.m.
