PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Valiants took two games from Delaware Valley Saturday afternoon on senior day, sweeping the Aggies in the three game set and now sit one conference win away from clinching a spot in the MAC Freedom playoffs for the fifth consecutive season.
Seniors
Dillon Healy (Hastings, N.Y./Hastings) and
Sam Garito (New Rochelle, N.Y./Iona Prep) were outstanding on the mound for the Valiants. Healy went the distance in game one, scattering six hits and allowing just two runs while striking out seven. In game two, Garito went five innings on the mound to earn the win, allowing one run on four hits, fanning two.
At the plate, junior
John Delahanty (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) recorded four hits and drove in a run. Sophomore
Danny Gallagher (Nanuet, N.Y./Paramus Catholic) recorded two hits, one RBI and three runs scored. Junior
Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) recorded three hits in game one and two runs batted in and fellow classmate
Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) racked up three hits and four RBI's on the day.
GAME ONE – The Valiants (22-11 overall, 12-6 MAC Freedom) jumped on the Aggies (14-15 overall, 3-13 MAC Freedom) for the second time in as many days, scoring in five of their six plate appearances including a five run first inning to take a commanding lead early.
The inning was highlighted by Delahanty's 100th career hit, a single through the right side, an RBI double from Gallagher and a triple from senior
Jordanis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond). The Valiants added to their lead with two runs in the third on a double down the right field line from freshman
Bryan Borruso (Blaivelt, N.Y./Tappen Zee).
After the Aggies scored two in the top of the fourth, the Valiants bettered them with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Lynch got the scoring started by bringing home Gallagher with a single to left field. Manhattanville added two more runs on a dropped fly ball by an Aggie outfielder to make it 10-2.
Lynch again drove home Gallagher in the fifth with a rocket off the top of the left field wall to give the Valiants a nine run lead. After senior
Julian Ponce (Port Chester, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) recorded his first career hit in the sixth, Conklin capped off the scoring with a two run single down the right field line to give the Valiants the 13-2 victory in game one.
GAME TWO – For the third consecutive game, the Valiants jumped out to an early lead over the Aggies, scoring twice in the bottom of the first. Senior
Sam Garito (New Rochelle, N.Y./Iona Prep) started things off with his hit of the season, and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Nunez to give the Valiants a 1-0 lead. Freshman
Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) scored later in the inning on a wild pitch to make it a two run game.
The Valiants added a run in the third on a sacrifice fly from senior
Kurt Hommen (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood), and added three more in the fourth on RBI doubles from Lynch, junior
Joe Anselmi (North Rockland, N.Y./North Rockland), and an RBI single by Delahanty.
After the Aggies cut the lead to two with three runs in the sixth, sophomore
Thomas Contrelli (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) held Delaware Valley scoreless in the seventh to earn the save.
Manhattanville returns to action Wednesday when they travel to Lehman for a non-conference matchup beginning at 4:00 P.M.
