DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – Junior
Alicia Marino (Mahopac, N.Y./Pleasantville) drove in two runs to set the program single-season record and the #22 Manhattanville College softball team broke the school standard for wins in a season as the Valiants swept Delaware Valley University, 2-0 and 8-1, in MAC Freedom action on Saturday afternoon at the DVU Softball Field.
With the two victories, Manhattanville (31-1, 11-1 MAC Freedom) breaks the previous program record of 30 wins, set in back-to-back seasons in 2005 and 2006.
Marino had two RBIs on the afternoon for the Valiants, as her two-run homer in the seventh inning of game two eclipsed the 47 RBIs of Michele Ribeiro '07 in 2006 as the new program single-season standard.
GAME ONE
The first game of the day was a pitchers' duel between Valiant sophomore
Alycia Feeney (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) and DelVal freshman Jamie Stefani, but Manhattanville rallied with two runs in the seventh to break a scoreless tie and pull out a 2-0 win.
Feeney (16-1) was in control all afternoon against the Aggies, striking out 10 without a walk and allowing only three singles. The sophomore held DelVal hitless through the first six innings before three base hits loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but she buckled down to get a strikeout and a groundout to complete her shutout. Her seventh clean sheet of the year ties her for second on the school's single-season list.
Manhattanville struggled against Stefani (9-8), getting just four singles and a walk over the first six innings and leaving one runner on in each stanza. But Feeney matched Stefani zero for zero, striking out nine to keep the game scoreless through six frames.
The Valiant rally finally came in the seventh, as three upperclassmen – junior
Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge), senior
Alyx Scapperotti (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) and junior
Shelbee Damianos (Ojai, Calif./Nordhoff) – strung together back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases with no outs. Freshman
Sophia Chapelone (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) finally plated a run with a sacrifice fly, and sophomore
Alexis Ventarola (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) followed with another sac fly to give the visitors a little breathing room.
GAME TWO
The Valiant offense had a little more punch in game two, scoring twice in the first inning on the way to a record-setting 8-1 victory.
After taking seven innings to solve Stefani in game one, it took only three batters to do the same thing in game two. Chapelone led off with a single, was sacrificed to second by Ventarola, and came home on an RBI double off the bat of freshman
Desiree Buboi (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran). Classmate
Evonne Torres (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Pioneer) followed with a run-scoring single to double the Valiant lead after half an inning.
Manhattanville got three more runs in the fourth inning to widen its lead. Back-to-back doubles by freshman
Aarin Hartenstein (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) and Diemicke made it 3-0 before Diemicke came home on a wild pitch. Chapelone added an RBI single to score junior
Brittany Deieso (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) and put the visitors up by five.
The Valiants added three more in the top of the seventh. Buboi singled with one out to set the stage for Marino, who launched the record-setting two-run homer to left. Hartenstein followed that up with a solo shot of her own later in the inning.
Feeney (17-1) allowed only one run on seven hits to pick up her second victory of the day, moving her into sixth place on the school's single-season wins list.
Manhattanville will return home for a non-conference doubleheader against New York University tomorrow beginning at noon at Manhattanville Field.
