ANNONDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Despite a five point effort from sophomore
Tyler Bentrewicz (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville), the Valiants fell to Bard College 9-8 Wednesday evening in their final non-conference game of the season.
Bentrewicz led the Valiants (3-6 overall) with four goals and an assist, setting a new career-high in goals in a game, and matching his career best point total which he set against United States Merchant Marine Academy earlier this season. Junior
Colin Morrissey (Shelton, Conn./St. Joseph) netted two goals and junior
Ed Motherway (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) and freshman
Erik Sparby (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) each scored a goal as well. On the defensive end, sophomore
Jacob Cayton (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) and freshman
Sam Hahn (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) each set new career highs in ground balls with six each. In goal, junior
Zach Hoffman (Loudonville, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) made 11 saves in the loss.
The Valiants led for the majority of the first three quarters of play before Bard (4-5 overall) took control in the fourth quarter. Sparby scored the only goal of the first period for Manhattanville but a goal from Emmet O'Connell midway through the period leveled the score heading into the second period. Bentrewicz scored his first of the game early in the second, but Bard scored the final two goals of the half to lead 3-2 as the teams headed into the halftime break.
The Valiants came charging back to begin the second half, getting goals from Bentrewicz, Morrissey and Motherway to take a 5-3 lead. Bard did not go away however, responding with the next four goals to take a two-goal lead under a minute into the fourth quarter. The Valiants retook the lead with two goals from Bentrewicz and a goal from Morrissey to lead 8-7 with 10:44 remaining.
Bard evened the score again with a goal 80 seconds later, and scored the game-winner with 49 seconds remaining in regulation. Despite winning the ensuing faceoff, the Valiants were unable to get a shot off and fell to 3-6 on the year.
Manhattanville will look to get back on track as they begin MAC Freedom play on Saturday when they host Misericordia University at GoValiants.com Field at 1:00 P.M.
