Valiant Hit Parade Continues in Softball's 14-3 and 15-2 Sweep of DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Seven different Valiants homered as part of a 36-hit barrage as the Manhattanville College softball team rolled past preseason favorite DeSales University by the scores of 14-3 and 15-2 in MAC Freedom action on Friday afternoon at the DSU Softball Field.

Many players had excellent days at the plate for Manhattanville (23-1, 7-1 MAC Freedom), but the best may have been freshman Desiree Buboi (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran), who went 6 for 7 with a homer, two doubles, four runs batted in and seven runs scored. Classmate Sophia Chapelone (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) also went 5 for 6 with a homer and scored seven times, while fellow freshman Evonne Torres (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Pioneer) had a pair of homers as well for the visitors.

Already entering the day as Division III's leader with 1.41 homers per game, the squad hit eight homers in 10 innings to give the team 39 long balls this year, already matching the program-record 39 hit in 2012. Junior Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) also became the 13th different Valiant to hit a homer this season, as the team continues to shatter the previous record of nine also set in 2012.

GAME ONE

Manhattanville made quick work of DeSales in game one, hitting five homers and amassing 19 hits overall on the way to a 14-3 victory in five innings.

Buboi had a monster game to start the day, going 4-for-4 with a homer, two doubles, four RBIs and four runs scored. Junior Alicia Marino (Mahopac, N.Y./Pleasantville) had three hits (including a homer) and drove in three, while Torres, Diemicke and junior Brittany Deieso (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) as well as freshman Evonne Torres (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Pioneer) all had two hits and homered as well in the win.

It did not take long for Manhattanville to get going in game one, scoring five times in the first inning. An RBI double from Buboi opened the scoring, and that was followed by a two-run homer from Torres to make it a 3-0 game. A single from freshman Aarin Hartenstein (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) was then followed by another two-run homer, this one off the bat of Diemicke, to put Manhattanville up 5-0 after half an inning.

Two more runs came home in the second on a Buboi double and a single from Marino, while Buboi continued swinging a red-hot bat by launching a homer to make it 8-0 in the fourth.

Manhattanville added five more runs in the fifth, starting with a leadoff solo shot from Deieso. A Buboi RBI single was followed by a two-run shot off the bat of Marino, her team-leading seventh of the year. The runs continued later on a Hartenstein run-scoring double and a Deieso's second hit of the inning.

Sophomore Alycia Feeney (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) did not need all the run support, as she limited DeSales to five hits while striking out five in five innings to pick up her 12th win of the year. Her only blemish was a three-run homer with two outs in the fifth that erased her potential sixth shutout of the year.

GAME TWO

The runs didn't stop in the second game, with seven different players driving in runs in the 15-2 win.

Chapelone, Torres and Hartenstein all had three hits apiece in the win, with Hartenstein driving in a game-high four runs and Chapelone scoring all four times she got on base. Junior Shelbee Damianos (Ojai, Calif./Nordhoff) also homered and drove in three as well for the Valiants.

The Valiants scored three times before making an out to start game two, with a Chapelone single followed by a two-run homer from Damianos. Marino added an RBI single to score Buboi with the third run as part of a four-run first.

Five more Valiants crossed the plate in the second, with the big hits coming on RBI singles from Torres and Diemicke sandwiched around a two-run two-bagger by Hartenstein. A Damianos double and another two-run homer from Torres in the third inning game Manhattanville a 12-1 advantage.

Chapelone got in on the home run action with her fourth in the last four games to lead off the fifth, followed by another two-run double from Hartenstein that capped the scoring.

Feeney got the start and again got the win in game two as well, ceding only three hits and one earned run in another five-inning victory.

Manhattanville will be off for almost a week before its next games, when the squad travels to Montclair State University for two games with the Red Hawks on Thursday beginning at 3 p.m.
