EWING, N.J. – Sophomore
Alycia Feeney (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) tossed a five-inning perfect game and freshman
Desiree Buboi (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran) drove in a school postseason-record six runs as second-seeded Manhattanville College, ranked 19th in the latest NFCA Div. III Top 25 Poll, rolled to a 9-0 victory over third-seeded Neumann University in game one of the Ewing, New Jersey, Regional of the 2016 NCAA Division III Softball Championships, hosted by the College of New Jersey at Dr. June Walker Field on Friday.
Manhattanville (38-2) advances into the winner's bracket, where they will play the winner of today's second game between top-seeded TCNJ and fourth-seeded College of Staten Island tomorrow at 10 a.m. Neumann (26-14) will face the loser of TCNJ and Staten Island in an elimination game tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.
Feeney was masterful in the circle for Manhattanville, striking out five and completely neutralizing a Neumann offense that came in hitting .356 on the season. It is the first postseason perfect game in program history and the first perfecto overall since
Alyssa Taylor '14 beat Hunter College 9-0 in five innings on April 9, 2014. She also matched Taylor's program record from 2014 with her 10th shutout of the season.
Meanwhile, Buboi was huge at the plate for the Valiants, going 2 for two with a homer, double, walk and six RBIs, which ties for fourth on the school single-game list. Classmate
Sophia Chapelone (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) also went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored from the top of the order to lead the Valiant attack.
Manhattanville wasted no time getting in front, scoring twice after just three batters. Chapelone singled and moved to second after a walk to sophomore
Laurel Coito (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic), and both runners came home on a Buboi double. Freshman
Aarin Hartenstein (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) added to the lead with a one-out single, giving the Valiants a 3-0 lead after one.
Five more runs were plated in the fourth on just two swings of the bat from Chapelone and Buboi. The shortstop drove home one with a RBI single to right center, and the big swing came later from Buboi, who launched a grand slam to left field that put the squad up 8-0 after two.
Chapelone added another run-scoring single in the third to complete the Valiant scoring, setting the stage for Feeney to finish off the Knights.
