Field Hockey Drops 1-0 Non-Conference Matchup to Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine – Despite earning 12 penalty corners on the afternoon, the Manhattanville College field hockey team was held scoreless against Southern Maine, dropping a non-conference matchup 1-0 Sunday.
 
The Valiants (2-2 overall) registered eight shots on the day, five of which were on cage, and threatened with multiple penalty corner opportunities but were unable to beat Huskie goalkeeper Amanda Kasbohm. 
 
In goal for Manhattanville, junior Kaitlin Halloran (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) made four saves, and senior Bregje Smits (Bussum, Netherlands/Willen de Zwigger College) made a defensive saves, but Southern Maine (3-2 overall) forward Tayla Smedberg scored the game's only goal on a redirection from Samantha Crosman with just under five minutes remaining in regulation to give the Huskies the 1-0 victory.
 
For the Valiants, Smits led the team with four shots on the day, two on goal, while classmate Amanda Cirocco (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley), sophomore Nicole Fanelle, and freshmen Ameerah Thomas (Norfolk, Va./Granby) and Maisey Kettlewood (Nottingham, N.H./Dover) recorded one shot apiece. 
 
Manhattanville continues its opening stretch on the road to begin the 2016 season, visiting Saint Thomas Aquinas College on Wednesday at 4:00 pm before traveling to William Smith next weekend to partake in the William Smith Classic.
