POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – For the second consecutive day, the Manhattanville College field hockey team needed more than 70 minutes of regulation to determine a winner, coming away on top today with a 3-2 overtime victory to secure third place in the annual Betty Richey Tournament hosted by Vassar College.
Â
The Valiants (1-1 overall) came out victorious in a back and forth battle with the Knights of SUNY Geneseo (0-2 overall) thanks in part to an overtime goal from senior
Bregje Smits (Bussum, Netherlands/Willen de Zwigger College) just over a minute into the extra frame.Â
Â
For Smits, it was her second goal of the game, marking the fourth time in her career that the Dutch native recorded a multi-goal game. Her first goal of the game came in the 53rd minute when she blasted a shot off a penalty corner from junior
Melissa Stys (Pequannock, N.J./Kent School) to give Manhattanville a 2-1 lead in the second half. The Knights quickly responded however, scoring just 71 seconds later on a goal from Maria Dillingham to send the game into overtime.
Â
Just 82 seconds into the extra period, the duo of Smits and Stys connected again on a penalty corner, with Smits finding the back of the cage to give the Valiants their first win of the season.
Â
Stys had a special connection with the Dutch natives for the afternoon, supplying an assist on all three goals, finding junior
Lisa Maxwell (Wassenaar, Netherlands/Maerlant Lyceum) inside the circle for the first goal of the afternoon. Stys has now registered a point on each Valiant goal this season, leading the team with five points.Â
Â
Between the pipes, junior goalkeeper
Kaitlin Halloran (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) made 10 saves, allowing the two Knight goals to earn her first win of the season. Halloran along with junior defender
Haley Linkroum (Deposit, N.Y./Deposit) were named to the All-Tournament team for their play this weekend.
