Manhattanville closed the afternoon with another very strong hitting performance, posting its first-ever 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-21) victory over William Paterson. After 25 straight losses to the Pioneers dating back to 1988, the Valiants have now beaten WPU in back-to-back seasons.
The trio of Mackey, Reid and LiVolsi were nearly unstoppable against the Pioneers, combining for 45 kills in three sets. Mackey hit an incredible .556 with 17 kills and two errors on 27 attempts, followed close behind by Reid with 16 kills. LiVolsi also posted a .417 hitting percentage with a career-high 12 kills on 24 attacks. The performance marks the first time since before the program restarted in 2007 that three players recorded double-digit kill totals in a three-set match.
LiVolsi also added 12 digs for her first career double-double, and she was joined by Quinabo with another double-double of 45 assists and 20 digs. Her 45 assists are the second-most in program history for a three-set match, behind only the 48 of Lu Bono '02 on September 30, 2001 against Connecticut College.
Manhattanville took an early lead after a 13-5 run closed out the opening stanza, helped by Mackey's seven kills on 11 errorless attempts. Reid took over in the second set, putting down nine balls on 15 attempts as the Valiants used a 10-3 run to turn an 11-10 lead into an insurmountable 21-13 advantage.
The Valiants spotted the Pioneers a 7-1 lead to start the third set, but the home team stormed back with a 12-3 run to regain control. Mackey helped close things out with a ridiculous .889 hitting percentage, taking nine swings and putting eight down for kills.
Sitting at 3-0 for the fourth straight season, Manhattanville will look to remain undefeated on Wednesday night, when the Valiants travel to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Mariners.
