Women's Soccer Can't Close Out Drew in Tough 3-2 (2OT) Defeat

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Drew University's Sarah Burcaw scored the game-winning goal in the 104th minute as the Rangers escaped GoValiants.com Field with a 3-2 (2OT) victory over the Manhattanville College women's soccer team in non-conference action on Wednesday evening.

In a match that saw Drew (2-1) have the upper hand in both possession and shots, a solid defensive effort and an opportunistic offense gave Manhattanville (0-2) not one, but two one-goal leads over the course of the evening. However, Drew scored once late in the first half and then again with three minutes remaining in regulation to eliminate both advantages.

Sophomore Dany Swidler (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) and senior Alex Carlbom (Gothenburg, Sweden/Kents Hill School) both scored for the Valiants, while senior Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) was once again excellent in goal with 13 saves for the home team.

The Valiants opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, when senior Melissa Barcia (Somers, N.Y./Somers) was taken down in the box to earn the team a shot from the penalty spot. Despite keeper Ryan Jackson guessing correctly, Swidler still managed to slot the ball perfectly into the bottom left corner for her second goal in as many games.

Drew's Caroline Kelly evened the score with 29 seconds left in the first half, but Manhattanville regained the lead in the 54th minute when Carlbom contested a clearance attempt by Drew backup keeper Andee Higgins and knocked the ball into an empty net for her first collegiate goal.

The Valiants again attempted to hold onto the lead, and were about three minutes away from doing so before Thalia Santacruz played a ball into the middle of the box for Erin Connors, who beat Diemicke to the far post to tie the score and send the match into extra time.

Manhattanville had arguably the best chance of the first overtime period just before the final whistle, but senior Kerri Durkin (Mahopac, N.Y./John F. Kennedy Catholic) fired a shot off the post from a tough angle. In the second overtime, Diemicke came out of her net to deny a breakaway chance for the Rangers, but the ball caromed directly to Burcaw, who one-timed a shot into the empty net.

Diemicke kept the Valiants in the match all night long and finished with 13 saves, as the visitors ended the night with a 28-6 edge in total shots. The effort was Diemicke's 16th career double-digit save game and the fourth-highest single-game total of her career.

Manhattanville will play its first road game of the year on Friday but still won't have to leave Purchase, as the Valiants make the short trip down Anderson Hill Road to take on Purchase College on Friday at 5 p.m.
