ONEONTA, N.Y. – Junior forward
Robin Schaufele (Kalix, Sweden/Kungsfaegeln) found the back of the net off of a loose ball in the 90th minute as the Valiant men's soccer team handed Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute their first loss of the season in the opening round of the Mayor's Cup hosted by SUNY Oneonta.
Despite being outshot 14-4 by the Engineers who appeared in last season's NCAA Tournament, the Valiants (3-1 overall) were able to sustain an attack over the final 15 minutes of action, breaking through in the final minute of regulation on a shot from Schaufele that beat Engineer goalkeeper Ryan Nealon just inside the left post to give Manhattanville their third win of the season. For Schaufele, it was his 12th career goal, first of 2016.
On the defensive end, the Valiants were tested throughout the game, facing 14 shots and defending three corners from RPI (1-1-1), but freshman goalkeeper
Tim Carsting (Falun, Sweden/Soltorgsgymnasiet) stood tall in goal, making eight saves on the day to record his third win and third shutout of his young career.
"That was a very nice win for our program. We kept a much better shape today than we had against Vassar on Tuesdy. While they [RPI] had a fair amount of shots, we were very patient defensively and very content with allowing RPI shots from over 25 yards out," said head coach
Kyle Dezotell. "That is a very strong and well-coached program and we are pleased to get the win. We are looking forward to playing against a Final Four team from last season in Oneonta State tomorrow."
As mentioned by Dezotell, the Valiants will square off with host SUNY Oneonta, ranked third in the NSCAA preseason poll, tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 pm.
