Valiants Take Down Bison 5-1 in NEHC Action

HARRISVILLE, R.I. - The Valiants bounced back from a tough loss on Friday with their sixth straight victory over the Bison of Nichols College 5-1 Saturday afternoon inside Levy Rink.

Freshman Amanda Sabia (Freehold, N.J./The Gunnery) scored twice for her first two career goals in the win for the Valiants, and juniors Karly Kapur (Sparta, N.J./N.J. Colonials) and Kristi Peters (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks), and sophomore Nicole Mensi (Mamaroneck, N.Y./SUNY Plattsburgh) each tallied a goal in the win.  Freshman netminder Taylor Elias (Winnipeg, Canada/Canadian International Hockey Academy) stopped 16 shots to earn her second career win between the pipes.  Manhattanville held a huge advantage in shots for the third straight game, outshooting the Bison 51-17 in the contest.

It took just under six minutes for the Valiants to find the back of the net, taking the lead on Sabia's  first collegiate goal, a shorthanded tally on a pass from fellow classmate Ashley Lougheed (Vancouver, Canada/Pacific Steelers).  After the Bison leveled the scoring two minutes later, the Valiants added two goals in 36 off the sticks of Sabia and Kapur to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.

The crimson and black continued to dominate the pace of play in the second period, outshooting the host Bison 16-5 in the frame, finding the back of the net once on a shot from Peters for her third goal of the season.  Continuing to shut down the Bison, the Valiants outshot Nichols 16-9 in the final stanza, capping off their scoring with Mensi's 12th goal of the season.

With the win Manhattanville improves to 8-5 on the year, 6-2 in New England Hockey Conference play.  Nichols falls to 0-14-1 for the season, 0-7 in NEHC action.  The Valiants have a quick turnaround this week as they host Trinity College in non-conference action on Tuesday at Playland Ice Casino starting at 7:00 pm.
