Balanced Attack Leads Women's Hoops to Decisive First MAC Freedom Win over Wilkes

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Sophomore Ivy Coles (Freeport, N.Y./Christ The King) led a balanced scoring attack with a game-high 15 points and classmate Kayleah McGuire (Somers, N.Y./Somers) came one rebound short of a double-double as the Manhattanville College women's basketball team earned its first MAC Freedom win of the year with a decisive 76-42 victory over Wilkes University on Saturday afternoon at Kennedy Gym.

All 12 players that entered the game for Manhattanville (5-7, 1-1 MAC Freedom) scored at least two points on the day, paced by Coles with her career-high 15. McGuire had a great all-around game with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting, nine rebounds, four steals, two blocks and two assists. Senior Brittany Deieso (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) chipped in eight points, six assists and four rebounds, while freshman Nancy Caballero (Henderson, Nev./Liberty) added eight points and eight boards as well for the home team.

The Valiants dominated Wilkes (4-8, 0-2 MAC Freedom) in every possible category on the day, including a huge 40-16 scoring edge in the paint and a 19-1 advantage in points off turnovers. The team also led Wilkes 14-3 in second-chance points and 12-3 on the fast break as well.

Wilkes managed to hang with the Valiants for much of the first quarter, even though Manhattanville took the lead for good just 2:43 into the contest on a layup from senior Jazmin Pryce (Patterson, N.Y./Brewster) that put the Valiants up 4-3. The home team used a 7-0 run late in the quarter, featuring a three-pointer from sophomore Courtney Osieja (Mountainside, N.J./Governor Livingston), to take a 15-9 lead after 10 minutes.

Manhattanville took control of the game in the second quarter, limiting the Lady Colonels to 2-of-9 shooting with nine turnovers while outscoring the visitors, 14-5. Junior Joiada Darnell (St. Albans, N.Y./Humanities and the Arts) started a 12-2 run early in the frame with a layup and the run ended with a pair of free throws from senior Sarah Kelley (Ewing, N.J./Ewing), and Caballero followed with a layup to give the Valiants a 29-14 lead at the half.

The Valiants heated up from the field in the second half, shooting 52.8 percent (19 of-36) to put the game away. After Wilkes scored six straight points to get back within 13 at 33-20, Manhattanville rattled off 14 straight points and 21 of the next 24 to blow the game open. McGuire had nine points and Coles added seven during the run, which saw the Lady Colonels go 0-for-12 from the field.

Manhattanville got everybody involved in the offense late in the game, as the Valiants closed by hitting seven of their last eight field-goal attempts. Junior Sam Milazzo (Bellmore, N.Y./John F Kennedy) hit all three shots and also had two assists to lead the charge, while classmate Kelsey Decker (Sidney, N.Y./Sidney) knocked down a pair of threes to help build the lead up to as many as 40 points (73-33) with 1:51 left. Sophomore Jess Nichols-Larosa (Randolph, Mass./Randolph) chipped in five points and two assists and freshman Taylor Porter (Rio Vista, Calif./Rio Vista) hit her only shot as well for the Valiants.

Manhattanville finished the game shooting 31 of 69 (44.9 percent) from the field, while limiting Wilkes to 13-of-50 (26.0 percent) accuracy from the field.

The Valiants will return to MAC Freedom play on Wednesday night, when the team travels to DeSales University to take on the Bulldogs in a rematch of last year's MAC Freedom Tournament semifinal beginning at 6 p.m.
