Field Hockey Drops Last-Minute Heartbreaker to DeSales, 3-2

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College field hockey team dropped a heart-breaking 3-2 decision to DeSales University Wednesday night at GoValiants.com Field.

Each team scored once in the first half and once in the second half before Christie Hansen deflected in the game-winning goal for DeSales (9-6, 3-2 MACF) with 49 seconds left as the Valiants were unable to keep the game tied while short-handed in the closing minutes.

Hansen struck first for DeSales just shy of the six-minute mark, going five-hole on Manhattanville (4-11, 1-4 MACF) senior goalkeeper Kaitlin Halloran (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) from the right side of the circle.

Sophomore Ameerah Thomas (Norfolk, Va./Granby) answered just past the 22-minute mark, knocking home a loose ball in front of the cage off an assist from junior Emily Antinozzi (Rye, N.Y./Rye) for her fourth goal of the season.

In the second half, off a penalty corner, Hansen added her second goal of the match, the benefactor of a missed clear by the Manhattanville defense, pushing the Bulldogs back in front.

Sophomore Robin Boot (Bedum, Netherlands/H.N. Werkman College) squared the match again for Manhattanville at 52:29 with her fifth goal of the season, carrying the ball from near midfield all the way into the circle while the DeSales defense retreated, before uncorking a laser past DeSales goalie Katarina Polyviou.

From there, Manhattanville endured the final five minutes shorthanded, and nearly held, blocking one DeSales shot, while Halloran saved two more, before Hansen's hat trick-completing goal, her eighth of the season, gave the Bulldogs the win.

The Valiants hit the road Saturday for a 12:00 match against Eastern, before returning to GoValiants.com Field on Thursday, October 26 for Senior Night, match time scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
