PURCHASE, N.Y. – Sophomore
Cristian Araujo (Miami, Fla./Miami Palmetto) scored the only goal of the match in the 61st minute as Manhattanville College's men's soccer team knocked off Wilkes University, 1-0 Saturday afternoon in MAC Freedom action.
Manhattanville (8-8-1, 3-3-1 MACF) applied pressure throughout the first half, taking nine shots, but the Wilkes (8-9-1, 2-4-1 MACF) defense held firm, blocking four of those nine shots, forcing goalkeeper Tim Gallagher to make only one save.
In the second half, Manhattanville missed on their first six shots, with freshman
Pablo Bravo Olle (Barcelona, Spain/LFG Bon Soleil) and senior
Jeff Santos (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) both missing high by inches. The Valiants finally broke through when, off a pass from Bravo Olle, Araujo fired a shot from 20 yards out that hit off Wilkes defender Casey Ritsick's leg, and found the back of the net, just out of reach of Gallagher's reach.
From there, it was the Wilkes offense that turned up the intensity, taking 13 shots over the final 28 minutes, as the Valiants held off one rush after another. Cole Hefner had a header knock off the crossbar, then a second header denied by Manhattanville sophomore goalkeeper
Tim Carsting (Falun, Sweden/Soltorgsgymnasiet) all within five seconds in the 67th minute. Camry Huff had a look from inside the 18-yard box on the left side denied by Carsting in the 74th minute, and the sophomore grabbed Danny McGinley's header in the 82nd minute, the final shot on goal from Wilkes in the match.
The victory briefly kept Manhattanville in the hunt for the fourth and final spot in the upcoming MAC Freedom Tournament, but Misericordia's 5-1 win over Delaware Valley later Saturday night ended the season for the Valiants.
Before the match, the team recognized its 10 seniors, the largest senior class since the nine seniors on the 2010 team: Santos,

Ryan Trainor (North Salem, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic),
