Wilkes Spoils Women’s Soccer Senior Day as Valiants Drop 2-1 Heartbreaker

PURCHASE, N.Y. - Wilkes University's Elise Brubaker scored the game-winning goal in the 84th minute as the Lady Colonels came away with a 2-1 victory over Manhattanville College at GoValiants.com Field Saturday afternoon in MAC Freedom women's soccer action.

Manhattanville (3-10-1, 0-7-0) put together a strong effort on Senior Day against the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament, keeping Wilkes (12-2-3, 5-1-1) off the board for more than 51 minutes, holding a 1-0 lead for nearly 20 minutes.

Freshman Ashley Pacheco (Throggs Neck, N.Y./Pelham Prep) struck in the 33rd minute for the Valiants, curving a shot through the wind just inside the left post past Colonels' goalkeeper Courtney Stanley for her fifth goal of the season.

That lead held up until the 52nd minute, when Catherine Gregoire sent a high-arcing ball into the box from 35 yards out that landed just in front of Manhattanville sophomore goalkeeper Bella Beltrami (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury), then bounced just over Beltrami's fingertips, and across the goal line. The score remained tied at one until Brubaker delivered a shot from 20 yards out into the right upper 90, putting the Colonels in front.

Beltrami saved an Allison Peet penalty kick in the final minute of the match to keep Manhattanville within a goal, but the Valiants were unable to get a shot off after Brubaker's game-winner.

The match ends the Valiants' season and concludes the careers of Manhattanville's two seniors: Mackenzie Trainor (Port Jervis, N.Y./Port Jervis) and Jules Browne (Dover Plains, N.Y./Dover).
