PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's field hockey team recorded its first MAC Freedom Conference victory of the 2017 season Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 victory over Delaware Valley University at GoValiants.com Field.
Junior
Emily Antinozzi (Rye, N.Y./Rye) scored two goals for the Valiants (3-9, 1-2 MAC Freedom), pushing her team-leading total to nine, while senior
Haley Linkroum (Deposit, N.Y./Deposit) recorded her first career goal from her defensive position.
Manhattanville fell behind just past the mid-way point of the first half when DelVal (4-8, 0-3 MAC Freedom) freshman forward Gillian Nardelli knocked in a loose ball near the left post for her team-leading seventh goal of the season. The Valiants responded quickly as Antinozzi notched her first goal of the day less than four minutes later when she put away the rebound off the initial shot from sophomore
Robin Boot (Bedum, Netherlands/H.N. Werkman College).
In the second half, off one of Manhattanville's seven penalty corners, Linkroum gave Manhattanville the lead when she re-directed a shot from senior
Melissa Stys (Pequannock, N.J./Kent School) past Aggies goalkeeper Rosie Bishop. Antinozzi added what wound up being the game-winning goal just past the 56-minute mark inside the right post off an assist from senior
Lisa Maxwell (Wassenaar, Netherlands/Maerlant Lyceum), giving the Western New England transfer three multi-goal games in her first season with the Valiants. Nardelli added her second goal of the match with just over five minutes to play, finding space in front of the cage, beating Manhattanville senior goalie
Kaitlin Halloran (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East).
The Valiants held on from there, surviving a nail-biting final 60 seconds that included three penalty corners for the Aggies. Halloran finished the day with eight saves, right on her season average.
The Valiants return to action next Saturday at Noon on the road against Wilkes. The team returns to GoValiants.com Field for back-to-back 7:00 p.m. games October 17 and 18 against Stevens and DeSales, respectively.
