WENHAM, MA – The Manhattanville College women's basketball team dropped a 47-41 decision to Rhode Island College on the second and final day of the Gordon College Classic.
One day after four players reached double figures in an 80-45 win over the host Fighting Scots, Manhattanville (1-1) saw only
Kayleah McGuire (Somers, N.Y./Somers) repeat the feat Saturday afternoon, as the junior finished with 11 points. Sophomores
Nancy Caballero (Henderson, Nev./Liberty) and
Kymane Jones (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville ) added eight points apiece for the Valiants, while Jordyn Gauvin led all scorers with 15 points for Rhode Island College (3-0).
Both teams were nearly identical from the field, with the Valiants finishing 15-for-46 and RIC finishing 16-for-49; RIC finished with a three point edge from the charity stripe (11-for-15 to 8-for-13) and one more made three-pointer (4-for-15 to 3-for-8).
The Anchorwomen started the game on a 10-4 run, but the Valiants answered with an 8-2 run of their own to tie the game at 12 at the end of the first quarter.
RIC grabbed the lead back early in the 2nd quarter and, with the exception of a tie at 14-all, led the entire quarter on the strength of 10 points off 12 Manhattanville turnovers, grabbing a 24-16 by the end of the half.
The Valiants started the second half on a 7-0 run, bookended by a pair of
Joiada Darnell (St. Albans, N.Y./Humanities and the Arts) layups, forcing an Anchorwomen timeout. RIC controlled the rest of the quarter following the timeout, finishing with a 12-0 run to push its lead out to 13 points entering the final quarter.
The two teams traded baskets over the first few minutes of the fourth quarter, with the Anchorwomen taking a 12-point lead at the 6:03 mark. Manhattanville responded with a 12-1 run, highlighted by three-pointers from McGuire and freshman
Spencer Shore (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton), to close the gap to 42-41. That was as close as the Valiants would get, as RIC went 3-for-4 from the foul line in the final 30 seconds to put the game on ice.
The Valiants are back in action Monday night at 6 p.m. against the College of Saint Elizabeth in their home opener from Kennedy Gymnasium.
