RYE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College women's hockey team was unable to hold off consistent pressure from Amherst Tuesday afternoon, as the Valiants dropped a 4-0 decision to the Mammoths in a non-conference matchup.
Amherst (1-2) took advantage of power play opportunities, scoring on each of its first two man-advantages, once in both the first and second periods. The Mammoths 45-shot attack against Manhattanville (2-3) sophomore goalie
Taylor Elias (Winnipeg, Man./Canadian International Hockey Academy) were the most shots allowed by the Valiants in their last 24 games, dating back to last season.
Emma Griese scored her first goal of the season, on the power play, for the Mammoths almost exactly halfway through the opening period. Jocelyn Hunyadi added a power play goal of her own less than four minutes into the second period, and Mia DelRosso made it 3-0 Amherst with her first collegiate goal 45 seconds later.
The two sides traded shots back and forth over the next 10 minutes, including an attempt by freshman
Tianna Lopes (West Vancouver, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers) that got past Amherst goalie Bailey Plaman, but hit the pipe, just barely keeping Lopes from her first collegiate goal. Emma Flynn added the final goal of the period, and the game, for Amherst at the 15:19 mark, knocking in her first collegiate goal from just outside the crease off a pass from Alex Toupal.
The Valiants finished with 34 shots led by junior
Nicole Mensi (Mamaroneck, N.Y./SUNY Plattsburgh) and sophomore
Amanda Sabia (Freehold, N.J./The Gunnery), who had five shots each; Elias finished with a career-high 41 saves.
The Valiants will have more than a week to prepare for their next game before returning to action Saturday, December 2, kicking off a weekend series with double-conference opponent Lebanon Valley, continuing a five game home-stand.
