Milazzo's Career Day Helps Women's Hoops Match Best Start Since 1983-84 With 66-46 Win

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – Senior Sam Milazzo (Bellmore, N.Y./John F Kennedy) recorded career highs in points and rebounds, while junior Kayleah McGuire (Somers, N.Y./Somers) continued her double-digit scoring streak as the Manhattanville College women's basketball team beat the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's (L.I.) College by a 66-46 score on Saturday evening.

With the win, Manhattanville (5-1) matched the 1983-84 and 1982-83 teams for the second-best best six-game start to a season in program history, behind only the 8-1 start for the team way back in 1975-76.

Milazzo made the most of her 23 minutes for the Valiants, scoring 20 while grabbing nine rebounds breaking her previous high marks of 12 and 7, respectively; the senior finished 9-for-11 from the field (81.8%). McGuire finished with 16 points, her sixth straight game in double figures.

Senior Joiada Darnell (St. Albans, N.Y./Humanities and the Arts) and freshman Jykayla Elting (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) combined to score the first 10 points of the game for the Valiants. Milazzo added four in the quarter as the Valiants opened up a 22-14 lead at the end of the opening 10 minutes. Andrea Iavarone added six in the opening frame for St. Joseph's (2-5).

Milazzo and McGuire combined for 10 of Manhattanville's 18 points in the second quarter as the Valiants maintained a double-digit lead for nearly seven minutes, taking a 40-25 lead into the locker room.

In the third quarter, Manhattanville pushed its lead out to 49-30 before the Golden Eagles countered with a 6-0 run to close the quarter, trimming the deficit to 13. That was as close as it would get the rest of the way, as Manhattanville held St. Joseph's to just 28.6% from the field over the final 10 minutes. The Valiants ended the game with a 42-24 advantage on points in the paint and a 12-5 edge in points off turnovers.

Manhattanville is back in action at home Monday evening against Bard, with tip-off scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
