Women's Hockey Falls to Rival UMass-Boston in Final Regular Season Matchup

BOSTON, Mass. – The Manhattanville College women's hockey team finished off their 2016-17 regular season schedule Saturday when they took on UMass-Boston inside the Edward T. Berry Ice Rink. Despite goals from junior Karly Kapur (Sparta, N.J./N.J. Colonials) and sophomore Kat Reilly (Holbrook, N.Y./Boston Shamrocks (JWHL)), the Valiants fell to the Beacons 3-2.

Reilly and Kapur led the scoring efforts for Manhattanville who were playing in their final tune-up before the New England Hockey Conference tournament quarterfinal round next weekend. Juniors Sarah Sinning (Southold, N.Y./National Sports Academy) and Kristi Peters (Newport Beach, Calif./Anaheim Lady Ducks), and freshmen Janet Xu (Edmonton, Alberta/Ontario Hockey Academy) and Zoey Pellowitz (Arlington, Va./Washington Pride) added one assist each in the loss. In goal, sophomore goalkeeper Rose Pijaca (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) made 22 saves on the day as she suffered just her second loss in league play this season. Her counterpart Rachel Myette needed 42 saves to earn the win for the Beacons.

The Valiants had a quick turnaround after defeating Salve Regina 5-3 last night, traveling to Massachusetts early this morning but showed no signs of fatigue as it took just 67 seconds for Kapur to give the crimson and black the lead. Xu and Peters earned assists on the goal and the Valiants held the Beacons scoreless for the next 17 minutes, but UMass got on the board late in the period with a power-play goal from Alli Bianchini to tie the score 1-1 at the first intermission.

The Valiants struck first in the middle frame, taking the lead on Reilly's goal, but once again the Beacons responded with two goals late in the period to take a 3-2 lead into the final frame.  In the third period, Manhattanville fired 20 shots on goal, using an extra attacker for the final 1:28 but Myette stood tall between the pipes and kept Manhattanville out of the back of the net as the Beacons held on for the regular season series sweep of the Valiants 3-2.

Manhattanville now awaits the results of today's contests to determine their opponent for next weekend's quarterfinal round matchup inside the Playland Ice Casino. A full postseason preview will be available on GoValiants.com next week.
