Offense Explodes for 14 Runs In Game Two for Another #21 Softball Split in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – Sunday was a day of extremes for the 21st-ranked Manhattanville College softball team, as the Valiants were nearly no-hit in the first game of the day, a 5-0 loss to Saint Mary's (Ind.) College, before pounding out 16 hits in a 14-2 (6 inn.) romp over Stockton University in game two of the team's second day on Spring Break at Hancock Park.

Senior Alicia Marino (Mahopac, N.Y./Pleasantville) led Manhattanville (3-5) at the plate, going 4-for-6 with a homer, a double and three runs batted in. Sophomores Alexa Grniet (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) and Aarin Hartenstein (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) both drove in a team-high four runs on the day, while fellow sophomore Desiree Buboi (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran) scored a team-leading four runs.

Game Two – Manhattanville 14, Stockton 2

Manhattanville had easily its best offensive day of the young season in the day's second game, as all 10 hitters recorded at least one hit and eight different players scored at least one run in the 14-2 win.

Grniet and Hartenstein highlighted the offensive effort with four RBIs each, with Grniet collecting a career-high three hits to lead all players. Marino also had three hits and drove in three runs, while Buboi scored four times despite having only two official at-bats.

Buboi opened the scoring in the first with a solo homer, her first of the year and 15th of her career, to move her into a tie for sixth on the school's career home run list. After Stockton scored twice in the bottom half, Grniet put the Valiants ahead for good in the second with a two-run single that scored Hartenstein and senior Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge).

Manhattanville broke the game open with four runs in the third, highlighted by a bases-clearing triple from Hartenstein and a solo homer from Marino, the 17th four-bagger of her career (fifth all-time at the school). Two more runs crossed in the fifth on RBI singles from Diemicke and Grniet, while freshman Melina Strano (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) drove in the first run of her career as part of a five-run sixth that helped end the game early.

Freshman Melissa Hess (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Hubert Catholic) was the beneficiary of all the offense, as she picked up her first collegiate win by allowing only two runs on eight hits over the six innings.

Game One – Saint Mary's 5, Manhattanville 0

The Valiants were stymied at the plate by Saint Mary's pitcher Morgan Raymer in the first game of the day, coming one out away from a no-hitter in the 5-0 loss.

Raymer (1-0) faced two batters over the minimum over the first six innings, with her only blemishes a hit-batter and walk with two outs in the fifth frame. Marino broke up the no-hit bid with a two-out double in the seventh for the Valiants' lone hit of the game.

The Belles struck for two runs in the top of the first against junior Alycia Feeney (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) and never looked back. A throwing error on a stolen-base attempt and a subsequent sacrifice fly drove home the two runs, which were all that Saint Mary's needed offensively. The Belles added one run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to pad their lead.

Manhattanville will take tomorrow off before returning to action on Tuesday morning, when the Valiants face off with Salve Regina University and SUNY Fredonia in Leesburg, Fla.
