MAHWAH, N.J. – The Manhattanville College women's lacrosse team finished with six unanswered goals over the final 18:48 of the game as the Valiants stormed back to defeat Ramapo College by a 10-8 score in non-conference action on a freezing Wednesday afternoon at the Ramapo Athletic Center.
Heading into halftime down by a 7-4 margin, Manhattanville (3-2) ceded the first goal of the second stanza just 41 seconds in to fall behind by four goals. But the Valiants took over after that, scoring six times and keeping Ramapo (3-3) off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest.
Junior
Carly Weiss (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) scored three of her game-high four goals in the second half to help the Valiants to the win, and also added an assist for a game-high five points. Senior
Jenna Nance (Glendale, Calif./Glendale) and sophomore
Kat Reilly (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) scored twice each, while senior
Sarah Dalsey (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) and junior
Katie Zambrotta (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) had one goal each as well.
Zambrotta started the Valiant comeback with 18:48 to go with her second goal of the year from the eight-meter arc. Manhattanville then made its move soon after, scoring three times in 32 seconds – twice from Weiss and once from Nance – to suddenly tie the game at eight with 13:51 to go.
After freshman
Bella Marchiselli (Williston Park, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) came up with a big save on the Roadrunners' subsequent possession, Weiss picked up the ground ball and went down the field before dishing off to Dalsey for the go-ahead goal with 11:07 on the clock. Marchiselli made another save and was helped by a pair of hit posts over the next two minutes to keep the Valiants ahead.
Manhattanville gained possession with 5:49 left after a Ramapo turnover and then played keep-away for the remainder of the game, withstanding multiple Roadrunner advances and eventually getting the clincher from Weiss with just three seconds left.
Manhattanville finished the afternoon with a 28-19 edge in shots, as the Roadrunners were kept in the game thanks to 10 saves from Monica Bubello. Marchiselli came up big for the Valiants in the second half, turning aside three of the four shots she faced to allow her teammates to come back, while junior
Shaniya Jones (Naugatuck, Conn./Chase Collegiate School) led the defensive unit with eight ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Manhattanville will look to keep its winning streak going on Saturday, when the Valiants travel south to Alvernia University for a 1 p.m. non-conference matchup.
