OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Despite rallying in the eighth inning, the Manhattanville College baseball team came up short in non-conference action against Old Westbury Wednesday afternoon at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
Senior
John Delahanty (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had a great day at the plate for the Valiants, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and fellow seniors
Joe Booker (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Port Jefferson) and
Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) had two hits each in the loss. On the mound, freshman
Richie Vetrano (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) went four innings on the mound in his first start of the season, allowing four hits and four runs. Junior
William Mohr (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands) and Freshman
Justin Proteau (Wolcott, Conn./Canterbury School) were strong on the mound, tossing a scoreless inning in relief.
The Valiants jumped out to an early lead Wednesday, plating a run in their first two at bats but were once again victim of big innings by their opposition. The Panthers came storming back in the fifth inning, scoring four runs to take a 4-2 lead. Old Westbury expanded the lead in the seventh when they scored twice on an RBI double and a sacrifice fly.
The Crimson and Black showed life in the eighth however, loading the bases before Booker drove home two with a double to left center and sophomore
Nick Simmons (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) followed it up with an RBI groundout to make it a one-run game heading to the bottom of the eighth, but once again it was the Panthers responding with a big inning in their at bat to keep the Valiants at bay. Old Westbury added four runs in the bottom half of the frame, capped off with a three-run double from Dean Sheridan.
Manhattanville scored twice in their final at bat but it was not enough as the Valiants fell to the Panthers 10-7, snapping a four-game win streak. The Valiants will be right back in action tomorrow when they travel to William Paterson with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 pm.
