Baseball Splits with Mount Aloysius on Day Two of Ripken Experience

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – On day two of the Ripken Experience, the Manhattanville College baseball team split a doubleheader series with Mount Aloysius College to earn their first win of the 2017 season Sunday at Griffith Field.

Game One
Junior Antonio Ogando (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) earned the win in game one for Manhattanville, tossing 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out four along the way. Fellow junior William Mohr (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands) earned the save after throwing 2.2 scoreless innings to close out the contest. Michael McCourt took the loss for the Mounties, allowing three runs and seven hits over four innings.  At the plate, sophomore Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) went 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored to lead the offensive attack. Junior Nick Campana (Yonkers, N.Y./St. John the Baptist Elementary) went a perfect 3-f-r-3 and fellow classmate Danny Gallagher (Nanuet, N.Y./Paramus Catholic) collected two hits as well, while freshman Ryan Ninivaggi (Throggs Neck, N.Y./Lehman) drove in two runs in the win.

After three scoreless innings, Manhattanville broke through in the top of the fourth when Ninivaggi drove home Scoggins with a double to left field and later scored on a throwing error to give the Valiants a 2-0 advantage. The Mounties got a run back in the bottom half of the frame, but the Valiants answered with two more tallies in the fifth behind a Scoggins RBI triple and an RBI groundout from Ninivaggi. Despite plating a run in the bottom half of the frame, Mohr shut the door down the stretch to earn his first save of the season and give Manhattanville their first win 4-2.

Game Two
In the backend of the doubleheader, Manhattanville suffered a tough loss, losing a lead in the final inning to drop game two and settle for a split with the Mounties. Senior Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) and freshman Stephen Merrill (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) drove home two runs in the game and senior Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep), and freshmen Matt Lynch (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and Luke Tebolt (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) recorded multi-hit games for the Valiants. Junior John Fanelli (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) suffered the loss for the Valiants after allowing three hits and two runs in three batters faced in the seventh inning. Creek Miller earned the win for Mount Aloysius, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings in relief and Rodney Patterson earned the save with a scoreless seventh inning.

Manhattanville took control early on, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first behind a two-run double from Conklin and an RBI single from Lynch and an RBI groundout from Scoggins. Mount Aloysius responded quickly though, plating five runs in their next two at bats to take a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the third. It was another big inning for the Valiants in the bottom half of the frame though as the Valiants plated four runs for the second time to retake the lead. Merrill got the scoring started with a two-run double before RBI singles from freshmen Joseph Silvestri (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) and Matthew Lynch.
The Mounties got a run back in the fifth but still headed to their final at bat trailing 8-6. After freshman Justin Proteau (Wolcott, Conn./Canterbury School) allowed a homerun to Bryan Buzi with one out, Fanelli came on in relief to attempt to collect the save. Two consecutive singles tied the score and a squeeze play gave the Mounties the lead 9-8. Mount Aloysius added an insurance run with a single up the middle and held on in the bottom half of the frame as Patte held Manhattanville scoreless to earn the save and give the Mounties a 10-8 win.
