Ninth Inning Rally Comes Up Short in Final Ripken Experience Game

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – A seven-run fifth inning propelled Penn State Berks past Manhattanville, 7-5, in the Valiants final game of the Ripken Experience in South Carolina inside Pelicans Stadium.

Senior John Delahanty (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run scored for the Valiants. Junior Danny Gallagher (Nanuet, N.Y./Paramus Catholic), sophomore Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) and senior Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) recorded two hits apiece as well. Junior Anthony LoFaro (Haworth, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest) suffered the loss for Manhattanville, allowing four runs over 4.1 innings in his first start of the season. Junior Danny Gallagher (Nanuet, N.Y./Paramus Catholic) was impressive in his first appearance for the Valiants this season, tossing the final 3.1 innings, allowing just two hits and fanning two. Senior Zach Reis nearly went the distance on the mound for Penn State, tossing 8.2 innings, being charged for five runs on 12 hits while striking out three.

The Nittany Lions plated all seven runs during the fifth inning when they recorded five hits and took advantage of miscues to take a commanding lead in the contest.  Manhattanville made it interesting in the final frame however, putting together a rally to put pressure on Penn State. Freshman Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI single to make it a five-run game with no outs. Two RBI groundouts make it 7-4 before Gallagher plated Iannarilli with a single to make it a two-run game. Penn State brought in Mitch Amenta to try to stop the bleeding and Amenta induced a pop out to end the Manhattanville rally and earn the save for Penn State.

Manhattanville returns to the northeast for their next contest when they host the John Jay College of Criminal Justice on Sunday for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm. Fans are encouraged to check GoValiants.com and the official Manhattanville athletics social media outlets for schedule updates for this weekend.
