PURCHASE, N.Y. – The tandem of junior
Alycia Feeney (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) and sophomore
Aarin Hartenstein (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) limited the College of Mount Saint Vincent to just two hits in 12 innings as the Manhattanville College softball team posted a 8-0 (5 inn.) and 7-2 sweep of the Dolphins in non-conference action on a rainy and windy Wednesday afternoon at Manhattanville Field.
Manhattanville (19-9) outhit Mount St. Vincent by a 20-2 margin in the two wins. Three Valiants had more hits than the opposition on the afternoon, led by freshmen
Melina Strano (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) and
Sam Jedrey (La Canada Flintridge, Calif./La Canada), both of whom went 4 for 5 with three runs batted in and three runs scored, respectively. Senior
Alicia Marino (Mahopac, N.Y./Pleasantville) also had a big day, going 3 for 6 with a homer and six RBIs.
Game 1: Manhattanville 8, Mount St. Vincent 0 (5 inn.)
Feeney was masterful in the first game of the day, allowing only a fourth-inning single in a five-inning complete-game win. Strano provided more than enough offense at the plate, going 2-for-2 with three RBIs in the 8-0 victory.
After both teams went down in order in the first, Manhattanville struck for three runs in the second. Marino walked to lead off the inning and then came all the way around on three separate wild pitches from Mackenzie Heizer. After sophomore
Evonne Torres (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Pioneer) was hit by a pitch with two outs, Jedrey plated her with a double to the gap in right center and then came home on a Strano RBI single.
The Valiants then came back with five runs in the third to put the game away. Sophomore
Desiree Buboi (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran) doubled home senior
Brittany Deieso (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) for the first run, followed by a run-scoring single from senior
Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge). Torres added an RBI single and then Strano greeted relief pitcher Hannah Thompson with a two-run double to reach the eight-run margin.
Feeney gave up her first hit of the game to Heizer with one out in the fourth, but that was it for the Dolphins, who had only one runner reach second base.
Game 2: Manhattanville 7, Mount St. Vincent 2
Marino almost single-handedly led the Valiants to a win in game two, as she drove in six of her team's seven runs in the 7-2 win. Hartenstein and Feeney did the rest in the circle, as the sophomore allowed one hit in 5.1 innings before the junior came on for the save.
Two swings of Marino's bat helped decide the game for the home team in game two. The first swing came in the third inning, when she launched her 21st career homer – a three-run shot – off the tree branches beyond center field to give the Valiants a 3-0 lead.
Mount St. Vincent had its only rally of the day in the sixth inning, as three walks and an error in the rainy conditions gave the Dolphins their first run. With the bases loaded and one out, Feeney came on in relief and got a pair of fly outs to limit the damage and keep the home team ahead.
Manhattanville then cemented its advantage with four runs in the bottom half to take a 7-2 lead. The Valiants scored one unearned run to take a two-run lead, and then Marino came up with another clutch two-out hit, this time a bases-clearing double to center field that gave the Valiants some breathing room.
Feeney then closed it out with a 1-2-3 seventh inning, extending her personal scoreless streak to 27.0 innings dating back to the Delaware Valley win on April 8. Her third career save also ranks her first on the school's all-time list.
Manhattanville will get back to MAC Freedom play on Saturday with a doubleheader against DeSales beginning at 1 p.m. at Manhattanville Field.
