Buboi's Two Homers, Eight RBIs Carry Valiant Softball to a Sweep of King's (Pa.)

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Sophomore Desiree Buboi (Villa Park, Calif./Orange Lutheran) hit a pair of home runs and drove in eight to lead the Manhattanville College softball team to a sweep of King's (Pa.) College in MAC Freedom softball action on Saturday afternoon at the Betzler Athletic Complex, winning by the scores of 14-4 (5 inn.) and 6-5.

Buboi came up huge to keep Manhattanville (10-8, 4-0 MAC Freedom) perfect in conference play, hitting .667 (4 for 6) with two homers, two doubles, eight RBIs and five runs scored in the two games. Senior Alicia Marino (Mahopac, N.Y./Pleasantville) added a homer, three RBIs and three runs scored as part of her 5-for-7 day as well for the visitors.

Game One – Manhattanville 14, King's (Pa.) 4 (5 inn.)

Manhattanville pounded out 16 hits in five innings in the first game of the day, rolling to a 14-4 win. Buboi led the charge, going 2-for-2 with five RBIs and three runs scored, while Marino did not make an out, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored.

The game got off to a great start for the visitors, as sophomore Sophia Chapelone (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) led off with a homer to put the Valiants ahead. Two more runs scored later in the frame on two-run double from sophomore Aarin Hartenstein (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge).

After King's (6-6, 2-2 MAC Freedom) tied the game with three runs in the bottom half, Manhattanville struck for four in the second to regain its advantage. RBI doubles from junior Laurel Coito (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) and Marino started the rally, while senior Dolores Diemicke (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) also delivered a run-scoring single to end the scoring.

Buboi then did the rest to end the game early, scoring two runs with a two-out double in the third and then clearing the bases with another two-bagger in the fifth. For good measure, Marino followed that with her second homer of the year, a two-run shot.

Junior Alycia Feeney (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) picked up the win for the Valiants, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out two in the five-inning win to move to 5-4 on the year.

Game Two – Manhattanville 6, King's (Pa.) 5

Manhattanville hit three more home runs in the second game of the day, including a go-ahead two-run shot by Buboi in the top of the sixth inning that gave the Valiants a 6-5 win. The sophomore finished the day with two homers and three RBIs, while Diemicke also homered for the Valiants in the win.

King's got on the board first in its first at-bat, but Manhattanville needed only two batters to tie the game in the second, as Hartenstein led off with a double and came home on a single from freshman Melina Strano (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster). A double from freshman Sam Jedrey (La Canada Flintridge, Calif./La Canada) then put two in scoring position, allowing Strano to subsequently come home on a Lady Monarch error.

Solo homers from Buboi and Diemicke in the fifth put the visitors back up by a pair after King's had tied the game in the third, but a three-run homer from Megan Beaupre put the Lady Monarchs up by a 5-4 score after five. However, Buboi was not done, as she came to the plate in the sixth after a Coito one-out single and again sent a ball over the left-field fence to give Manhattanville a 6-5 lead.

Feeney then came on in relief for the final two innings, retiring all six batters she faced to pick up her second career save. Freshman Melissa Hess (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Hubert Catholic) got the start and pitched well despite a no-decision, putting herself in line for the win by allowing only two runs (one earned) on five hits in four innings. Hartenstein came on for the fifth and gave up Beaupre's homer before Feeney came on to close things out.

Manhattanville will return to action on Wednesday, when the Valiants travel to Mount Saint Mary College for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
