Baseball Comes Up Short in Series Opener With DeSales

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College baseball team could not get the offense started on Friday, dropping a MAC Freedom battle with DeSales University 10-3 at Manhattanville Field.

Junior Danny Gallagher (Nanuet, N.Y./Paramus Catholic) and freshman Peter Iannarilli (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) recorded two hits on the day for the Valiants and senior John Delahanty (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) drove in two runs to lead the offense. Delahanty along with fellow seniors Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep), Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland), and freshman Stephen Merrill (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) added the only other hits for Manhattanville.

After allowing two runs in the top of the first, the Valiants tied the score with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame, pushing across both runs on a double from Delahanty to level the scoring at the end of the opening stanza. After holding the Bulldogs scoreless in the second, the Valiants took the lead when freshman Matt Lynch (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) drove home classmate Joseph Silvestri (Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) with a sacrifice fly in foul territory in left field.

With both teams going scoreless in their next two at bats, the Valiants held on to a 3-2 lead entering the fifth before the Bulldogs offense came to life, plating four runs on four hits to take a 6-2 lead. The Valiants threatened in the bottom half of the frame, but Silvestri was picked off with the bases loaded for the final out of the inning to end the threat. Manhattanville could never get started again at the plate, and DeSales added four more insurance runs to hang on for the win in the series opener.

The Valiants will look to rebound with two wins tomorrow when they travel to Center Valley to wrap up their series with the Bulldogs. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
