PURCHASE, N.Y. – A slow offensive start Thursday proved costly for the Manhattanville College baseball team as the Valiants fell to Eastern Connecticut State University 6-4 in non-conference action at Manhattanville Field.
Senior Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) moved into a solo fifth place all time in career doubles and hits at Manhattanville with a two-bagger in the sixth inning of Thursday's loss. The Bronx native now ranks in the top-five all-time in seven offensive categories for Manhattanville. Lynch finished the day 1-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored. Senior John Delahanty (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) was the lone Valiant to record multiple hits on the day, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI. On the mound, senior John Moschetti (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) was extremely effective in relief, tossing two scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out three.
The Warriors took control early on Thursday, scoring a run in the top of the first and adding another single tally in the third to go up 2-0 through three innings. The Warriors added to the lead with a four-run sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run home run by Alexander White. Despite recorded just one hit through their first five at bats, the Valiants broke through with four hits and three runs in the bottom of the sixth. With two runners on, R. Lynch lifted a double to the wall in left center to clear the bases and scored on another double to the wall in left center by Delahanty to make it 6-3 at the end of the sixth.
The Valiant rally continued in the seventh when the Crimson and Black pushed across another run on a sharply hit ball to shortstop by Booker that allowed Gallagher to score from second base to make it a two-run game. Manhattanville got two runners on base in the ninth, bringing the winning run to the plate but were unable to score, falling by the 6-4 final.
The squad is back in action tomorrow to kick off a critical series with the Colonels of Wilkes University on the road beginning at 3:30 pm.
