WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Senior
Andrew Murray (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) scored four goals to become the seventh player in program history to eclipse the 100-goal mark for his career but the Valiants came up short in their season finale, falling to King's College 9-8 Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.
Murray led all scorers Saturday and added an assist for a five-point performance. Senior
Colin Morrissey (Shelton, Conn./St. Joseph) added two goals in his final game and junior
Tyler Bentrewicz (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) and freshman
Ryan Leonard (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) scored a goal each. Senior
Zach Hoffman (Loudonville, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) made eight saves on the afternoon but it was not enough to carry the Valiants past the Monarchs.
It was a slow start for both teams in the opening quarter, with King's finding the back of the net once while the Valiants were held scoreless in the opening 15 minutes. Manhattanville got on the board midway through the second quarter with Murray's first of the afternoon. Bentrewicz and Morrissey added goals as well in the frame but the Valiants trailed 4-3 at the half.
The Crimson and Black began the second half with two goals 50 seconds apart to take the lead for the first time, 5-4. The two squads went back and forth the rest of the quarter and entered the fourth quarter tied 7-7. Murray started the scoring in the fourth, giving the Valiants the lead with 12:12 to play, but it would not be enough. With 1:07 remaining, King's leveled the scoring at eight goals apiece. The Monarchs won the ensuing faceoff and with ten seconds remaining, found the back of the net to hand the Valiants a loss in the final seconds for the second consecutive game.
