PORTLAND, M.E. – An early goal from Senior
Lisa Maxwell (Wassenaar, Netherlands/Maerlant Lyceum) failed to hold up for the Manhattanville College field hockey team Sunday afternoon, as the Valiants fell on the road to Southern Maine, 2-1.
Eight minutes in, senior
Melissa Stys (Pequannock, N.J./Kent School) ripped a shot that classmate Maxwell knocked home off the rebound for a 1-0 Manhattanville (0-4) lead. Olivia Brown's answer in the twenty-third minute for Southern Maine (1-2) tied the game. Lindsay Jackson's second effort off her initial shot at the thirty-seven-minute mark pushed Southern Maine out in front.
Five different Valiants recorded shots during the game, including sophomore
Ameerah Thomas (Norfolk, Va./Granby) and classmate
Robin Boot (Bedum, Netherlands/H.N. Werkman College), but Southern Maine goalkeeper Anna Huff kept the damage to just Maxwell's early mark. Manhatanville senior goalie
Kaitlin Halloran (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) made nine saves during the game, including three in a seven-second span late in the second half to keep the deficit at one.
Manhattanville will be back in action Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. at GoValiants.com Field when they take on St. Thomas Aquinas.
