WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Manhattanville College women's volleyball team had a tough start to MAC Freedom play on Wednesday night at McGrane Gymnasium, as the Valiants let a pair of one-set leads slip away in a 3-2 (21-25, 25-16, 18-25, 25-19, 15-10) loss to King's (Pa.) College.
Senior
Meagan Dattoma (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) led Manhattanville (5-2, 0-1 MAC Freedom) with a career-high 15 kills on .351 hitting, and also added a team-best 16 digs for her first double-double of the season. Senior
Kerry Mackey (Smithtown, N.Y./Christ the King) and junior
Laura LiVolsi (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) both added 14 kills in a losing effort for the Valiants, while freshman
Keisha Schutte (Ewa Beach, Hawaii/James Campbell) was pressed into setting duty and responded by tying for 10th on the school single-match list with 44 assists.
Mackey became only the fourth player in program history to record 800 career kills with her 11th kill of the night, and she also had two blocks to move into 10th place on the school's all-time list with 158.
Rachel Miller led King's (8-1, 1-0 MAC Freedom) with a match-high 24 kills, followed by Katelyn Shifflett with 15 kills and a match-best five blocks.
Manhattanville had its best set in the opening frame, hitting .394 with 17 kills on 33 attempts in jumping out to a 1-0 lead, but the Valiants then had arguably their worst set of the night after that, hitting .000 as the Lady Monarchs came back to tie the match.
The visitors responded well in the third set, putting down 15 more kills and hitting .297 to take another one-set lead and sit one set from a win. However, King's put down a match-high 15 kills in the fourth set, as the home team outlasted the Valiants to send the match to a fifth and final frame.
The Valiants struggled again in the final set, registering only four kills while King's put down 10. The match was close at the switch, with the Lady Monarchs leading by only an 8-7 margin, but the home team finished by scoring seven of the last 10 points to close out the match.
Manhattanville will look to get back on the winning track on Saturday, when the Valiants travel to Notre Dame (Md.) University for a tri-match with the Gators and Christendom College starting at noon.
